Hi and welcome to the forum
@FrostD has given you some great advice.
If your kitty has had ketosis, there are a few really important things you can do to help her to recover fully and to stop it happening in the future.
- She needs to be eating a lot more than you are feeding her at the moment. Food is one of the ways to help prevent ketones developing again. So I would feed her every couple of hours. Feed before the insulin doses, then every couple of hours except for the two hours before the next preshot as I am hoping you will be able to hometest the blood glucose and we don’t feed for the 2 hours prior to this so the result won’t be food influenced. It sounds like she has a good appetite so that is good.
- You need to be testing the urine most days for ketones in the urine. It’s a simple test. You need to buy a bottle of Ketostix from Walmart or a pharmacy and follow the direction on the bottle. HERE is a link with hints how to collect the urine sample.
- I would really encourage you to think about hometesting the blood glucose. It’s so important that you know what the blood glucose before you give the dose and then again a few hours later to see how much the insulin has dropped the BG (blood glucose). You can buy a ReliOn Premier meter at Walmart for $9 and the test strips for $17.88 when you go in to buy the Ketostix.also get a box of lancets26 or 28 Gauge and some cotton rounds put behind the ear when testing. Link to hometesting hints HERE. If you give her a treat every time you test, whether successful of not, I think she will surprise you have much she will cooperate.
- Where did you get the reading 517 from? Was it the vet? And how long after the dose was it? It’s impossible for us to give any dosing advice at all, except to say don’t go up in 1 unit increments! For all we know, she could be dropping low and bouncing high up at the next preshot and the vet thinks the dose should be increased, when maybe it should be decreased……..until you see testing we won’t know. so please think about home testing. We can help you with it.
- Encourage fluids…..add a teaspoon of warm water to each snack if she will allow.
I can get someone to set up a spreadsheet for you if you would like. We would also like you to set up a signature which is very simple and only takes a couple of minutes. It tells us about your kitty so we done have to keep asking you about her.

Thank you so very much for all your help! I have PTSD from that ordeal, I know it sounds silly but she means so much to me!
The 517 reading was done at the vet today, they did a fructosamine test, told me it would be more accurate.
