My 14 year old Blacky crashed about a month ago, down to "unheard of levels" my vet said. Since then, he has nearly recovered all of his motor skills, but is still a bit wobbly. He crashed because we gave him too much insulin, and before he would eat. We have a meter our old vet sold to us, but it's not very user friendly, and I think the tabs that go in it are no longer produced...what meter could I get to monitor his levels closer, because right now we're just guessing by his activity
level and how much he actually eats, compared to what the vet told us to give. And once I have a meter, can we safely adjust the insulin? If so, how do we judge how much to give?

What specific meter do you now have?
many of us here use WalMart ReliOn Confirm or Confirm Micro, aka Glucocard 01 or 01 Mini from American Diabetes Warehouse

What kind of insulin to you give Blacky? There are lots of experienced users here who can provide dosing advice if you start a new thread (or change the title of this one) to something like: Need Lantus (or Prozinc or Vetsulin) dosing advice.
