There is a lot of variability in how cats respond to Lantus or other insulin. The best way for you to gauge your cat's progress is by home testing. You'll be able to see how the dose of insulin is having an effect on blood glucose levels. We can provide you with information on home testing and diabetes management.

In addition to your cat's response to insulin there are other basics to be aware of. For example, diet has a huge influence on blood glucose levels. Your cat should be eating a low carbohydrate, canned food diet. Many of the prescription cat food diets are either high in carbs than is desirable or made of an inferior quality food.

Hey everyone

My cat Katmandu was.recently diagnosed with Diabetes and is.on Lantus. How long did it take for you to see an in change in your pet ?
Welcome to the forum! This place is wonderful and the advice givers are generous and know their stuff! I have seen cats ( from this forum go into remission in months and others settling into a routine over the years. Ive heard here that every cat is different. Having people on this forum giving lando and i advice has made a huge difference in his health and my mental health ;) . It took lando and i months to develop a routine

Which "hard food" did the vet recommend? Often vets haven't had a lot of training in feline nutrition so we gets lots of members starting here on food that is inappropriate for diabetic cats. But don't change anything until you get a glucose monitoring kit. By the way, you can buy any human BG meter and the test strips will be a lot cheaper and easier to get when you need them. Just look for a meter that needs just a small blood drop.
