Recently diagnosed,nova mix 30 insulin recommended ?

Our little Moxie, age 17, diagnosed now for 2 month. Not one health issue prior. We tried food change to all wet canned, used "royal canin for diabetic cats" dry food for her treats, (since she used to eat plenty of treats ) and lightly cooked chicken breast 4 times a week. Moxie is still weak in hind legs, howls crazy at night for food and company, and daily glucose readings are now even a little higher 260-306. We also are trying antioxidant multi vitamins for ligaments (from vet), also bought "Blood sugar gold drops" for pets online which is a herbal mixture to put in her food which "supports" lower glucose.

Now, moving forward the flex pen with nova mix 30 is reccomended but some sites say the minimum dose of 1 will be too high to start her on, and no one seems to mention this product and easy use pen on your website, thoughts about this product ? PS ...Thank you for this amazing site.
 
Sorry, but I don't have experience with nova mix. For the back legs, neuropathy is often caused by unregulation and high BG over time. Those foods are fairly good for diabetics. The goal for diabetic cats is to provide moist food with high protein and very low carbs.

I don't have experience with "blood sugar gold drops". The label says it could cause some hypoglycemia. It is challenging to offer more info. I don't know the daily blood sugar values of your kitteh. You might consider keeping an online spreadsheet, like many of us do.

Like Jeff said using a spreadsheet will help the advice givers with giving accurate and safe advice.
If you need help @Marje and Gracie is a wizard at setting up the sheets.
There are many good supplements out there however, it is very important that you are home testing to avoid a hypo situation.
Dr Elsey makes a chicken dry food at 4.69% carbs and a salmon that is about 9%
Young again is also a common one around here but all of my cats got sick on it and is very high calorie.
I think Evo kitten is low as well.
Many of us use freeze dried for treats too.
There is a product for the neuropathy called "zobaline" many have had great success and of course regulation is key.
Others use vitamin B supplements instead of zobaline.

Where do you live?

Nova mix isn't really a good insulin for cats.....it tends to hit hard and fast and wear off before the end of the cycle. There are other, longer lasting and gentler insulins that work better like Lantus, Levemir and ProZinc

The Royal Canin Diabetic dry food is also high carb....You're going to get much better control if you can just get rid of the high carb kibble (even just for treats) and find something else that's low carb that she really likes. Most people here use freeze dried chicken (or other protein source) but if she likes plain chicken breast, you can use that too

You want to get on a good vitamin b 12 methylcobalamin supplement. Not familiar with liquid gold. A multi vitamin probably doesn't have as much b12 methylcobalamin as you need. Can you post a pic of the lables for that and the liquid gold?

Is your cat getting any insulin at all at the moment?

Ask your vet about a longer acting insulin such as ProZinc.

Pens are fine... Even Lantus comes in pen form... But we suggest you use a syringe to shoot because it allows more flexibility in dose. As you said, sometimes even 1 unit is too much or you need an in between dose like 1.25.

As I put in your intro thread I'm trilled to hear from someone else in Mexico. Where in Mexico are you?

I've haven't heard of the Nova mix either but you can find Lantus pens (also vials but is more practical to use pens) in almost all pharmacies you do not require a prescription to buy them. You should also look for BD syringes with half unit marks also easily available.

Vitamin B 12 for pets is another issue not so easily available, mostly inyectable and you have to get it through your vet or at veterinary pharmacies ( not many of them) you can buy some (human) through the internet but it takes a long long time to get here, you should be careful with the human brands sold here because they are not just B12

Mouser took/takes that. I don't know anything about it, just that she gave it to Mouser.

I don't know if Mouser's human comes to the board anymore. If you put his name in the search engine on the board, posts about him will come up.

What NovoMix® 30 is used for
The insulin aspart (rys), or “NovoMix® 30”, in NovoMix® 30 FlexPen® is a mixture of rapid- and longer-acting insulin used to treat diabetes mellitus.
When injected under your skin, NovoMix® 30 has a faster onset of action than soluble human insulin. It takes effect within 10 to 20 minutes. The maximum effect will occur between 1-4 hours after injection and the effect may last for up to 24 hours.
NovoMix® 30 is a pre-mixed neutral suspension consisting of rapid-acting insulin aspart (rys) (30%) and longer-acting protamine insulin aspart (rys) (70%).

Because of the 30% rapid acting insulin I deem that the NovaMix 30 is not suitable for cats. The rapid acting part acts faster than even N insulin. If you can't get a long lasting human insulin like Lantus or Levemir or the pet insulin ProZinc I would get the human insulin N (sometimes called NPH)
 
Thank you, I went in to Playa Del Carmen and bought the Lantus for Moxie, instead of the Nova mix 30. I tryed a long comment on here but a warning came up that it may be "spam like " and I couldn't post my whole comment, is this common ?
 
I don't think it is common. I'm kinda long-winded (wordy) sometimes, and never had an issue.

It's something more new because of the increased SPAM the forum has been receiving. Unfortunately, it can be frustrating for newer members. I believe it does settle down and you'll be able to post as you please :)
