Recently diagnosed floof!

Hi all!

Just wanted to introduce myself and my little ball of fuzz! Our little Juniper, who we think is about 9/10 years old, was diagnosed with diabetes on Tuesday. I was fully expecting it as she'd been drinking a lot more for about a week or two prior to diagnosis! We caught it pretty quick and all other functions are perfectly normal (thank goodness). She's currently on two single units of ProZinc a day and has her first glucose curve on Friday. I've already read a lot on this site and everyone seems so helpful and you've already provided me with a lot of information so a massive thanks!

Was the curve performed at the vet? Frequently such curves are not really good sine vet stress cab raise BG by 100 or more points (USA).
Most of us here test our cat's blood glucose at home using a human meter. We test before each shot and periodically between shots. We record our reading and other info in a spreadsheet. See:

What are you feeding? A low-carb canned is best. No reason for a prescription food. Here is a list of commercial low-carb canned

Hi Larry and Kitties!

She's not had her curve yet; it will be on Friday next week. I know stress can affect BG but she's surprisingly quite chilled at the vets! I've got an AlphaTrak 2 from my work place as we had a bunch going spare so I do plan on home testing but I wanted to vet to do the first one! Only problem with the AlplaTrak is how expensive the strips are!
She's currently still on the diet she was before she was diagnosed as I didn't want the insulin plus a massive drop in carbs to force a hypo; I was hoping once her glucose curve was done I could look into altering her diet. Vet mentioned prescription food but I think I'll just look into low grain/grain free, high protein foods for her. Saying that, she's probably eating less carbs at the moment as she used to graze on dry food and have one wet meal in the evening; now she has the choice of wet food or dry food twice a day and always goes for the wet food!

Welcome Sophia and Juniper!
Indeed the AT2 strips are expensive so many of us that have one save it for at home curves and use a human meter for daily testing . There's no need for the prescription food but be careful about low grain / grain free as they can still have starches, which can keep the carbohydrate content higher. We have some other UK members too that will be able to help more with foods .
