She has not received insulin since Tuesday morning and unless I see a crazy midnight spike it sure is lookin like she's diabetes free?

Ling's numbers are looking great. Try to check her blood sugar levels twice a day (like at the old AM and PM shot times). If she stays in normal range for two weeks without insulin, she is officially considered in remission. (I think you're already on Day 5!)

After that, I would recommend checking her glucose levels once a week for several weeks and then once a month after that. That way, if her numbers start climbing back up, you can catch it quickly. Hopefully she'll stay in remission with a low-carb diet. :D:D:D

I'm low on strips, after the 8 tests I did on Saturday I'm giving her a day break. Yesterday she tested 122 and 109 at feeding times. So 122 thus far is the highest she's ever been. Though that was first thing in the morning and she got who knows how many treats on Saturday for her good behavior while getting all those ear pricks! I've relayed all this info to my vet and we'll see what they say. How weird is is though to have a cat diagnosed and then in remission three weeks later?!

Vet called me back. She is insisting Ling definitely is diabetic and this remission will be short lived. Ling has now been without insulin since Tuesday the 2nd. Yesterday she tested 96 before dinner and 104 two hours later. She's still being super picky with her food; she'll eat about 1/3 before wandering off but will keep begging. During the day and night I've been keeping her isolated with her bowl and she does finish her meals through the day/night. Vet didn't have anything to say about nausea and refused to write an RX for it. I'm incredibly frustrated that she had me spend $400 on insulin pens and while I'm very glad Ling doesn't seem to need it, it's more annoying to have purchased insulin only to not need it. I'm going to continue doing daily tests; if anything else happens I'll pop in here again. Thank you so much everyone who gave me such fantastic feedback, you are all amazing!

I'm so happy to hear that Ling's numbers are staying in the normal range. :) But how frustrating for your vet to be so pessimistic! Yes, cats can and do fall out of remission, but it's also possible for Ling to stay in remission for the rest of her life. Just make sure you keep her away from all high-carb foods and treats. Sorry, Ling, it's all low carb for you from now on.

Is there a different vet you can use? I can only imagine how irritating it is that your vet won't prescribe anti-nausea meds. The vet should know how important it is for kitty to eat.

Please check in every now and then to let us know how Ling is doing.

Lings daily tests have been very good; she's hovering around 100. Slightly lower before meals and slightly higher after. I purchased the fancy feast classic chicken to mix into her trader joes wet which at first she was excited for but her appetite had decreased the past day. This morning she hadn't finished as much as her overnight dinner. Then while I was at work she didn't finish her daytime meal. :/ so tonight fed up I tried some Parmesan on top. Clever girl was perfectly happy to eat her food with parm on top! At any rate, after the last week of letting her pick at her meals and increasing her portion i can no longer feel her spine as easily and her tiny frame is starting to fill back in a little. She's definitely not quite so skeletal feeling.

Update! Ling is still testing low. Though perhaps normal for her tiny size? The vet did not confirm that her consistant numbers in the 90s was OK or not. The very highest she's ever been is 136. That was after I added the Fancy Feast classic chicken to her usual wet. She had been eating pretty well since I started tricking her with parmesan. Lately she's been super weird. Last night she ate maybe 2/3rd her dinner through the night, today she ate 2/3rds of her breakfast and THEN here's something interesting that really makes me think she's absolutely nauseous: When I put her dinner down she ate it pretty eagerly and suddenly bolted and straight up yowled. I dunno about anyone your cats, but I have often heard Ling yowl right before puking. She's like, "NOOOO I don't want to puke!" Then pukes. Though this time she did not puke. She then ran back down the hall at me. I mixed some lysine on top of her food and she ate a little more but really wasn't interested. Then while I was in our guest bathroom she followed me in and tried to drink from the toilet??? Which is a main reason why that door is always closed. So I brought her with me back to her dinner and made her a fresh bowl of water which she wasn't interested in. Sigh. I tried treats and she didn't want those either. SO I left her alone for a few hours. I decided to check her glucose and she was 96. So not too bad. And she ate three treats. AND I caught her chugging water. And this time I noticed she was licking her lips and definitively looks like she doesn't feel great. Murrrr.... I'll be reaching out to my vet tonight and see what they answer me with tomorrow.

Yes, how frustrating. I read the last 5 items in this thread. Your vet does seem persistent. I don't understand why. The numbers you list in the SS don't look diabetic. Heck - look at Leo's numbers, he goes thru insulin like water.

Eating issues are tough. The Fancy Feast classic is good for diabetic cats. We have both our inside cats eating only those. I wish there were more flavors.

Yes, the yowling then puking. Our Chinus does that too. Fortunately not often. If you have a choice of changing vets, and you are really unhappy, that is something to consider.

Well she's still not eating great, but her BG numbers are decent. 102 and 91 the last two days. I'm definitely very glad to have her off insulin! My vet FINALLY has agreed she is experiencing nausea but won't give me a script. She says I can give her Pepcid (which I actually did start doing to see if it would help). Sigh. Her other recommendation is putting her on a kidney diet, which honestly I don't really know what that means. :p I know there's special food for kidney disease listed somewhere on these message boards.

Ling says "hi everyone thank you for helping my clueless mom she doesn't pet me enough"

You don't want anything to do with the "prescription" kidney diets...not only are they terribly high in carbs, so are no good for a diabetic, but the ingredients in them is really nothing special (except the price of course)
