I am about to switch my baby over to Lantus from Prozinc. I just received the Lantus in the mail from Marks and the gelpack was melted and it was room temperature, actually a little warmer. Is it safe to use? Will it go bad faster?

Yep it is safe to use, although it's shelf life might be slightly shortened for the way we tend to think of Lantus' longevity but it is designed to be stored at room temp by humans once they open the pen. The only reason we keep it cold is to extend its lifespan.

Thanks Mel.

Has anyone else experienced this and know how long it might last? I bought the pens so I need an idea of when to reorder. My initial plan was to reorder when I open the last pen, but since they all got hot does that mean they can go bad before even being opened?

Well that is hard to tell since we don't know when the ice pack melted so we don't know how long they have been at room temp. I know I have forgotten and left mine out in a 80 degree house and sitting in the sun for a good 12-16 hours before discovering it  And have never had a problem with it going bad. Now I'm shooting two at the moment and I'm still getting about 4-5 months out of a pen. The one I left out last summer while we were moving back in June I just pitched at the end of Sept. so I used it about 3 months after it was left out and it was one that I was using prior to leaving it out, so I think I probably got a good 5 almost 6 months out of it...Now I use Levemir not Lantus but they both have similar shelf lives. Just Lantus is guaranteed for 30 days while Lantus is guaranteed for 45 days and that is only because that is how long each company ran the trials. Most likely because they didn't feel that a human would still be using a single pen longer than that because their doses are much higher than those of our cats.

Testing will tell you when it is starting to go South.
