Hi
My cat Rosie has been home from the vet (after pulling through from ketoacidosis) for two and a half weeks. It's been a bit of a roller coaster because she was very resistant to the injections at first and as I have a to do them on my own it was hard and made me very stressed. We had quite a few disasters and wet fur but we persevered and for the last week we have developed our own way and have had successful injections! For some reason tonight I panicked and pressed before I was in her skin and lost some of the insulin, I feel so bad because it wasn't her fault, it was mine. I know how to do it, I don't know why I made such a mess of it.
She has been doing so well too and now I feel like I've potentially given her a step back.

Just for info Rosie is 15, she has 2 units of caninsulin twice a day and is having a low carb, high protein wet diet. She has reduced from obese to a normal weight. We haven't managed to get blood from ear pricks yet to test but keep trying (even the vet couldn't get it from her ears!) but she is tested weekly at the vets and has had results of 7.5 and 9.2 so far, which was 3 hours after eating.

Just want to be reassured that missing a bit of insulin tonight won't have done too much harm or set us back.

Thank you
Carol

Rosie should be alright.

Most of us here test or cats blood glucose at home using a human meter. It is good that you are try home testing. We test before each shot and periodically between shots. We record our reading and other info in a spreadsheet.
That is especially important in your case with prior DKA. Also home testing is cheaper and more convenient that go to the vet for BGs. Vert stress can raise BG by 100 (USA) oint or more

What low-carb canned are ou feeding? No reason for a prescription food. Here is a list of commercial low-carb canned

No harm done....we've ALL done "furshots" (that's what we call them when we shoot into the fur instead of the cat!)

The important part is to just never try re-shooting! We never know how much actually got into the cat, so we never give another shot

She might run a little higher this cycle, but she should be fine

Oh, yes - we've all done fur shots. I get so mad at myself when it happens. o_O However, if it happens, best not to reshoot and guess how much insulin was injected - better to be a little high one cycle than go into hypo numbers. Once you become successful at home testing, you'll have a more concrete way of accessing her BG levels.

Just in case you've not yet come across this forum sticky, it's got a really helpful diagram of the 'sweet spot' on the ear where it tends to be easier to get a blood sample.

Testing and injecting tips

BTW, even if some of your tests don't bear fruit the poking should cause more capillaries to develop at the test zones. All going well it should become easier to get samples. I found it tricky at first because I was nervous of overheating Saoirse's ear. Turns out I wasn't warming it long enough. When I warmed it longer I had better success.
