Hi All,
I've recently posted about needing advice on hypoallergenic food for a food trial, due to my boy Murphy struggling with allergies and basically scratching his own face off. Most recently he's caused a huge hematoma to his ear due to the scratching and head shaking.
However now I'm REALLY concerned as he's having another pancreatitis flare. This is the first time he's ever refused food in all his thirteen and a half years. He's also started either being incontinent or peeing outside the box, which he's also never done. His bg levels are fine, he's still I'm remission.
I'm taking him to the vet later today but I'm still so very worried about him. But I think this is a pancreatitis flare. He's been hanging his head down so I know he's feeling nauseous.
I've gone on a bit, apologies, but I wanted to put his struggles in context.

Basically I want advice on the best food for pancreatitis. Please can anyone help? I'd like to buy him some new food asap. Thank you.

I think low-fat is what people recommend for pancreatitis. I don't know any brands specifically. Good luck at the vet. Sending healing vines for a quick recovery.

Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear this. When we thought Speckles had pancreatitis, several vets suggested a novel protein diet, like venison. We didn't actually end up trying it because we had to syringe feed for over a week and it was easier to do a high calorie recovery food to make sure he was getting enough calories to keep his weight up at that point.
Do you have cyproheptadine in case he continues not wanting to eat over the weekend? Also, Cerenia and ondans would be good to have on hand for the nausea.

Low fat food really has no impact on feline pancreatitis. Squeaker is right now having a pancreatitis flare.

There is no actual treatment for pancreatitis, we can only treat the symptoms. The standard is: sub-q fluids, nausea control, pain control, and acid control. And I have found that B12 injections can help.

Your vet can give Cerenia and Pepcid injections as well as Reglan if vomiting is present. Appetite stimulants are not effective as long as nausea/acid are a factor. You can ask your vet for Cerenia tabs to keep on hand for future use and buy 10 mg famotidine tabs the dosage is 1/4 to 1/2 tablet to control the acid associated with pancreatitis.

Food: right now you can try baby food meat (make sure there is no onion, garlic, or veggies-----just meat and broth). You can also sprinkle a little grated parmesan cheese on food.

I can't stress enough the famotidine and B12 they can make a lot of difference.

Thanks All..
I really don't think he's well, it's breaking my heart. He's eating, so the vet thinks it best not to give cerenia. Plus they don't have the tablet option here as it's onlg licensed for dogs in the UK. I ant find famotidine here either. Not having a great success here.
He's still hiding the whole time. I let him out the last two days and he was gone for hours each time. I was probably being completely neurotic, but I kept calling for him and ended up searching for him an hour yesterday. I want him to go outside as it makes him happiest , but I'm keeping him in to watch him today.
I'm still feeding him royal canin wet food but think I should change as I've heard it's really not good ingredients-wise.
I'm going to order to some kattovit as he seemed to get on well with it previously.
Thank you all for your advice :-)

I just noticed you said his BG is still okay....
Did they happen to do an ultrasound when you took him to the vet?

Bandit had a severe pancreatitis flare back in March. He actually had to be hospitalized for a few days and have fluids administered via iv. :-( When he got home Bandit's vet had us feed him whatever he would eat, which was Fancy Feast and Sheba pates. He wouldn't eat his normal foods, Weruva and Wellness Core. Once his appetite came back (he had to start steroids and immunosuppresants for a different problem at the same time and they boosted his appetite a lot), he went back to eating his Weruva and Wellness.

Bandit's vet said there is no particular food that really helps with chronic pancreatitis, but he recommends foods with low carbs and high quality protein for cats with pancreatitis, which Bandit was already eating, anyway, so he kept him on the same food.

Hi,
Sorry for the delay in replying.. now adding seasonal gastric bug to the mix (not Murphy thank goodness).
Food arrived today so need to trial him on that. It's mostly kitten food and higher protein, low carb.
He's still hiding a lot and just not very happy. What was your thinking around the ultrasound? In case there's any new inflammation or growth? I could ask for that.
I've syringed his ear hematoma a couple of times which made him more comfortable as the swelling was completely blocking his ear.
He's still not actually been sick.. He's not got increased hunger or thirst. I'm not sure what's going on but I want him to be much more comfortable and happy than he clearly is.
Thank you hugely for your support and advice.

Hi Amy. I tried to access your spreadsheet and it wouldn't allow me to. I think you need to click on the "share" button which I think can be found on the top right.

Hi Cindi,
I had problems with this when Murphy was getting insulin.. but have already clicked the 'share' button. Apologies it can't be accessed.
Thankfully he's been I'm remission over four months now so there's no recent curves. I do intermittently test of course and we also had a fructosamine test a couple of weeks ago.. and he's been fine.
I'll try and rectify the spreadsheet access for potential future reference anyway.
:-)

Just checked his BG and its at 6.5 (116). I'm not too worried about this, but will keep an eye on it.
I'm just wondering if DKA can occur even when a cat is in remission? This is probably a very silly question, but I'm so tired today I can't even think straight. I've some ketostix to test his urine, but I wanted to see whether/how ketoacidosis can happen in the absence of diabetes? Thank you.
