EYES NEEDED - Really Struggling with Cat Food, Any Recommendations?

Hi everyone,

I’m Sandy’s owner, she’s a senior cat with diabetes who is also overweight. For the past couple years, she’s been on caninsulin and has been doing well. She has 2 units, two times a day, one before every meal.

For the past couple weeks, she’s been doing really great in the litter box, depicting good bowel movement. She has also been eating her Hills Prescription Glucose MD Kitten food with some form of wet food (fancy feast) regularly with no issue. She also has been on fortiflora cycle, about 20 days in.

She was eating all her food normally till yesterday but just today but this morning, as I gave her the fancy feast petite braised chicken, she ate half of a serving but was generally did not want to eat. After I looked at the food, it looked a little off because it was thicker and slimier but I wasn’t sure. I then gave her the MD kibble which she regularly eats and ate a couple bites but ended up refusing that to eat as well. I followed up with two different flavours of fancy feast which she ate a tiny bit of each can but generally refused either. I had went to the vet 2 weeks ago and he said she looked all good with the main concerns being her weight, diabetes and some dental health but gave the green light generally saying she’s doing well. Sandy doesn’t look like she’s in pain when she eats because even the kibble she ate a couple of bites but looked uninterested after. Plus this morning, she ate with good speed and showed no issues. She has no food in between her two big meals either. She looks like she’s still has energy, she went to the litter box and looks playful. But she doesn’t want to eat. The only factor I can say has changed today is my mom came back from another country after 2 months but Sandy doesn’t look startled by her so I’m not sure it’s the issue. It could also be the first serving of the braised chicken she ate wasn’t high “good” so she got nauseous. She was also eating from a low bowl where her whiskers don’t touch the sides.

All this to say, I’m really struggling with Sandy’s food and finding a food that she will eat and enjoy without me having to hand-feed her and that isn’t too high carb. I’ve tried the fancy feast stuff but it’s too inconsistent and I’ve spent so much money on it at this point. I feel like a bad cat parent because I consistently try my best to feed her at her designated meal times so she can get her insulin so when she refuses to eat, it really makes me panic and feel upset. And if she misses a shot, I get very worried. Can someone please help me with how to deal with a picky eater, some good food brands that they can eat with specific products, and some hacks to make food appetizing to them without upsetting their stomach?

I feel just horrible and sometimes it feels like I’m giving my all and it’s just not enough. I don’t have the money and resources to constantly go to the vet and explore different food options.

Any help would be appreciated :(

Do you by any chance think it's a texture issue? There are low carb options for pate, shredded, and gravy. You might have seen these food charts floating around but re-linking just in case:

https://www.bizave.com/foodlists/Combined_Food_Lists_Feeding_Guide.pdf

Moonie is a gravy addict and we feed the Weruva OMG Gravy line - they have % carb content on their website so if you go that route, you can just check the specific pouch / can before you buy.

When her appetite is low, I also sprinkle freeze dried chicken on her food as a topper.

If this is an ongoing issue you may also want to consider appetite stimulants like mirtazapine or anti-nausea meds.

Also, any reason why you've opted for the prescription diet? Most prescription diets are extremely expensive and high in carbs.

I think it might be a texture issue. Today I gave the grilled chicken feast in gravy and she ate it with no problems at all and loved it. Her appetite seemed to be back with the gravy compared to the pate.

I really think that the texture is the issue as she ate none of the pates. However, with more expensive brands like tiki car and weruva, I’m not sure if it’ll be feasible to give them to her in my current financial scenario.

I’ve currently got the grilled chicken feast in gravy which she seems to be enjoying a lot and eating but I’m worried if this is acceptable for her. on this chart that was linked here previously Cat Food As-Fed Chart it shows that it’s acceptable under the fancy feast gourmet grilled chicken but on the one you linked it’s %12 carb. Is it okay for me to keep her on this for a while since it doesn’t seem like the carb percentage is extremely high, or are there similar options with identical cost I can use that are less? Or is it dangerous if I keep her on the grilled fancy feast chicken in gravy. It’s the only one she seems to be eating as of now.

PS the prescription diet was given to me by the vet for her weight loss while also managing her diabetes. I’m not sure how good it is for her but the vet really insisted.

I’d put “?” by the title and put something in your title like “EYES NEEDED” to make sure you get a response from someone more experienced. But my personal take is that you should feed her what she’ll eat within your budget. If it’s FF grilled in gravy, that’s 12% carbs and not that far off from 10%. I would almost certainly eliminate that prescription diet though, and consider whether doing that would give you the budget to buy Weruva. Prescription food is really expensive and I would bet a lot of money that it’s very very high in carbs.

The other option if she’ll allow it is to mix the pate with gravy. If you mixed half and half for example, you’d get to 8.5% carbs (half is 5% and half is 12% roughly).

Yes, I have make that change, thank you so much. I feel the same as well. I think its better that she atleast eats something she will readily finish rather than not eat at all. I will also look into removing the prescription food. I was under the impression that just because its recommended by the vet, that its good but the more research i've done has shown otherwise. It would save me a lot of money as well. I can also test the pate with the gravy but from what it looks like she absolutely hates the pate right now.

Hopefully someone can comment on the FF grilled in gravy and give more of a green/yellow light on it. From what I see in the food charts, it doesnt seem to be a horrible option and one of the other threads said to not get to too caught up in the carb percentage.

For whatever it’s worth, some cats do better on higher carb low carb so I feed Moonie closer to 6-10% carbs. And if you could even mix a small bit of the pate with it, I bet you can get the overall carb mix down to 10% pretty easily since the FF grilled in gravy isn’t that far off. And if she won’t accept that then maybe this is the best option that is possible at this time and that’s ok :)
