Stayed up with him last night until 1 am and he was still out of it. Last check was 489 and I had to really fight the urge to give some insulin…..good thing I didn’t because at 5 am he was 365…I really expected a MUCH higher #.

He ate the food I left for him and wanted more this am. He’s no longer tucked back in his tent bed but stretched out on the bed in the sunshine and he was purring until I gave him the Clindamycin  The right side of his face is swollen a bit but it was worse last night so that’s a good sign I guess.

Again my thanks (and Reagan's too) for the good advice and handholding last night!!

******Swelling is not going down....Dr wants to see him ASAP. Will post results later. Geez

Re: Reagan this AM

Glad to see he is better this morning...God that was scary yesterday, Poor Reagan he just can't get a break, first the teeth and then the hypo, you guys must feel like you have been through the wringer! Give the big guy a couple of extra scritches from us. But at least the worst is past, the teeth are done and you and he can just concentrate on getting him better.

We will be keeping him in our prayers that he makes a speedy recovery from the dental and nothing else scary happens.

Re: Reagan this AM

Mel - you are right ...he just can't seem to get a break. Poor guy. Now he's fangless on one side....just checked on him and his tongue was sticking out the side...awwww.

Another thing ...his coat is just not growing back and he's still nekkid

Re: Reagan this AM

Time and patience Hun, Max's coat is slowly coming back too, while he is a little more fluffy than when he first got here he is still pretty bare. At least I can now pet him and feel fur instead of just skin but he is still pretty bare on the tail. Hopefully getting Reagan's mouth fixed will get his numbers more regulated and then his coat will come back faster. His body was probably working too much on the problems in his mouth than trying to grow hair.

By summer we may be competing to see who has more hair....lol

Re: Reagan this AM

Great news to read. Vinnie had 3 fangs pulled but his tongue still stays in. He's just had to learn how to eat all over again without those big canines to pick the food up. Maybe get him a little doggie sweater??? Hope the swelling goes down. Never had any swelling with Hope, Mishka, or Vinnie and all had extractions.

Re: Reagan this AM

Hope- Houdini had two fangs pulled and never any swelling either. Since Reagan has had sinus problems and runny eye, on the same side as the bad teeth, I'm wondering if the infection went from tooth into sinus cavity. The tech pointed out he had a little blood on his nose and to keep an eye on it.... no sneezing today or blood. Dr should be calling today so I will ask him.

I tried a sweater and he was frantically rolling around trying to get it off ....thought he was going to hurt himself!

Re: Reagan this AM

Hope infection clears up soon for Reagan and his coat comes back in. I am so glad you have him.........gorgeous boy who truly needed a loving and caring home. Vet have any rough estimate on his age?

Back from vet and he is OK - swelling is from fang tooth which was up into sinus plus badly infected molar on the same side. He got two antibiotic shots and Metacam for the swelling. Crossing my fingers that this does the trick and he gets better from here. He's eating OK as long as it's soupy so that's a plus....

Thanks for asking Cindy...... 3hrs sleep last night and #4 feeding coming up and then I'm done

... Metacam ...

There is now a black box warning for Metacam in cats.
"WARNING

Repeated use of meloxicam in cats has been associated with acute renal failure and death. Do not administer additional injectable or oral meloxicam to cats. See Contraindications, Warnings, and Precautions for detailed information."

Please monitor your cat carefully!

Hi Gail,
Im guessing you gave the first dose of metacam, if not more. Please read the link in my signature before you decide to give anymore. It has FINALLY been given a black box warning. I personally would not recommend it unless it were a life/death/QOL issue. There are alternatives. Buprenex is a more popular and safer one for dentals.

Im between jobs and have to run out the door. Can check in later tonight or tomorrow. Dont hesitate to ask questions!
I want you to be informed before giving any medication, let alone one as controversial and with a black box warning.

How old is Reagan?

ETA:
Please watch for any of these signs and report to (a different vet) immediately. Of course stop administering the medicine as well:
*

Disorientation
*

Incoordination
*

Decreased urine production
*

Straining to urinate
*

Loss of appetite
*

Lethargy
*

Vomiting
*

Weakness
*

Changes in water consumption and urination

Carolyn - I know the risks of Metacam and it was just the one injection. My vet is a leary of Metacam as I am..... FWIW I don't see that it made any difference anyway.....His face is still swollen.

I really appreciate your concern since I know what heartbreak it has brought you.

I just wish they would come up with something for cats..... I've seen it work wonders in dogs.

He is feeling better and the swelling is down somewhat. He looks like he feels better too.... his nose is still plugged up and his eye is still running but I'm hoping this is do to the swelling and will get better soon.

I was putting his food in the blender and making kitty soup and he only ate a little of it so I put his food down right out of the can and he slurped it right up.....here I thought I was doing good.......go figure

Thanks for asking..... I hope and pray he continues to improve.... As you might imagine horror stories keep running through my mind
