Hi my cat salem was diagnosed august 3 rd im trying to control his sugar first by diet . Im learning alot as i go . Right now im trying to learn the spreadsheet yall use to help yall understand whats going on with salem . Sugar has gone down from 460 on august 3 to the 200s but thats still too high but salem seems to be feeling much better. Im trying to understand not only feeding low carb wet foods but how much i read from one of your posts i should be feeding him 20 calories per pound . So salems down to 15lbs from 22lbs . So i figured he needs abt 300 calories a day . Salem never seems to be full . I dnt want to starve him but i dnt want him to get too much calories or the low carbs will not do any good if i feed him too much. So i guess i need to go back to feeding him alone so i can make sure hes not getting too much calories . The lowest his sugar has gone down to was 175 only once . Im waiting in getting help from feliene diabetic cats website with cost. Im waiting on the case worker ? Im on disabilty i have only my husband working now and we never go anywhere so i dont spend too much . How long does it take for a case worker to get to you ? We need to take salem to the vet to do a glucose curve so we may start him on insulin . I have already got a credit card to take him the first time to the vet . I maxied it out it was only a $300 dollar card . I need help i used ri work and pay all this myself but things are rough now my son is sick im sick my husbands sick so im doing my best to help everyone get there doctors appts and meds , now salems sick . I cnt cut back anymore or i wont be eating . I have cut back everywhere i can think . I need help i cnt let salem get sick and no help so i have let go of my pride for salems sake . My kitty comes first . Im worried abt after he does go on insulin i read how dangerous insulin can be . So im going to be sure i will be testing alot . Strips are low i cnt get a kit sent until they find out how much jnsulin salem needs . I feel like a bad mommie now . I just hope i understand the chart . So far its good . Im using an app niw ti record salems sugar and niw im finding out i need to record what flavors hes eating. He seems to do better on some flavors better than others even though they are all low carbs . Im learning just wortied we need to do his curve . U guess i will be selling some things now so i can get him that curve . How long does it take for the case worker ti get ahold of you . Trying to be patient but worried abt salems pancreas and his kidneys while waiting . Thanks im learning alot from yall !! So many caring people in this forum . Salem worries me cause hes so hungry all the time since im learning abt calories i will be feeding him three times a day now instead of two and back to feeding him separate ti keep up with what calories hes getting . Any other suggestions i need to know to help get his sugar down while i wait on the case worker . Salem eats 9 lives meaty pate . Super supper chicken and tuna , white fish etc . Oh i have also noticed salems throwing up large fur balls now that hes not eating dry food . Any suggestions on helping with fur balls now ?

don't worry about him being hungry -- because of the diabetes, he can't use all the nutrients in the food you feed, so yes, he will be hungry all the time, or at least tell you he is, until you get his blood glucose somewhat regulated .. and it's okay to feed him a bit more than the "recommended" dose for normal healthy cats, since he cannot get all the nutrients he needs on that diet now

add a little extra virgin olive oil to his meals, that helps with furballs .. or coconut oil (but start that slowly, just a little bit to start), also helps to add a bit of water, make the pate almost into gravy

you can do the curve yourself at home -- you'll need that information to help plan what to feed, how much insulin if any to give

if you are in the USA you can get a glucose meter inexpensively at Walmart, you don't have to get the "special meter for pets", especially since the test strips for those are much more expensive

keep asking questions, if one of us doesn't answer them, another will

welcome
