My Maxie was recently diagnosed as diabetic. Maxie has always been ravenous; cleaning any Bowl he could find. He's had this behavior since he was a kitten. He is now 7. When I noticed diabetic symptoms last week I immediately took him to the vet. In-office test showed his sugars were 350. I immediately changed his food without waiting for blood test results. I have multiple cats and all cats food have been changed. As you can imagine they are being picky at this point; all but Maxie who continues to clean his bowl. My challenge is my non diabetic cats are grazers and always have been. It takes them at least six hours to get through a bowl of wet food; by that time their next meal is ready. With the change in food they are becoming slower. Should I expect Maxie to become when I turn as a grazer or will he always be ravenous. My concern is as Maxie starts to feel better he will eventually get into my other cat's food and overeat which I do not want him to do. But I can also not watch cat food bowls 24 hours a day. If the feeling is he will not revert to a grazer any advice? Thanks

Hi and welcome!
When his diabetes controlled better he'll be less ravenous.

I understand your concern about feeding schedule for the multiple cat household but a few questions first, if I may:

Is Maxie on insulin?
What kind and what is his current dose?
Do you home test? It is super important that you give insulin injections only if his BG numbers are safe to do so, or you'll risk Hypoglycemia.
The BG tests performed at a vet's office often show higher BG levels due to stress. That makes many vets Rx higher than necessary doses of insulin. BG 350 @vets is not bad at all.
If Maxie is on insulin and you switched him to low carbs only food his BG level might come down dramatically and his insulin needs will change. Home testing is the only way to know how low he is @every injection.

Thank you for the reply. Yes Maxi is on insulin. Prozinc u40 to be specific. Yes I have a home test meter but I was told not to test him until Friday. I am also giving him blood sugar gold. As an update he ate like the Dickens on just the blood sugar gold Saturday Sunday and Monday. Today he is not finishing his bowl. Breakfast took about 2 hours to eat when normally it's gone in 5 minutes. He ate a little less than half of dinner and walked away. But then again none of them want to eat it because their Food has changed. I'm thinking maybe I should combine the old food and new food together for a couple of days. I'm going to try that tomorrow morning.

Hi, I have always read that when changing foods you should do it gradually, mixing old and new, gradually increasing the new while decreasing the old. That would help with the picky eaters.
