Raw Food

So I am attempting the raw food thing. I am taking Fiend back to his old vet across town...they were way more concerned with the animal than my financial condition. So I will be getting the insulin tomorrow. Even though Renfield (my other kitty companion) is not diabetic I am goin to feed him the raw food too...he unlike Fiend loves the wet and would go nutty if Fiend was getting something he wasn't, brotherly competition ya know?

Should I feed according to the directions on the raw food? I feel very lucky to live in Portland, OR right now, there is a local company that specializes in raw food for cats and dogs.

I have been rubbing his ears and explaining to him what is going to happen soon. It has always amazed me how animals seem to understand...he has been way more affectionate, but I think it is because he is happy not to be at the vet any more. I will post tomorrow when I have more info and I am sure I will have more questions...

michelle please stay on this thread for awhile k? it's hard to find you as i keep expecting you'll post on the same thread. not forever just for a while. i really want to stay up to date with you.

What are the feeding instructions on the bag? Some pet food companies overestimate how much to give, I guess so you run out of food faster and have to buy more food more frequently.

Is the raw food in patties or nugget shapes or is it like a tub or roll? Some raw pet foods companies suggest feeding 1-2 ounces per day. But it really depends on your cat's activity level and age. One of my civies eats 4 Nature's Variety raw nuggets per day (each nugget is 1.5 ounces), 1 for breakfast and 3 split over the course of a 4 hours for dinner (well, it's one for dinner and then a snack 2.5 hours later and then another one an hour after that  ). He's extremely active. My other civie just eats 2 NV raw nuggets per day.

buttttt, until on the insulin and not 'starving' I'd let him eat as much as he want. untreated diabetic's are literally starving to death.

I am new to the online posting thing so I will continue to post on the line. I found a vet that advocates for home testing...yeah! They did an initial glucose level and he was at 350. The woman he is seeing today is passionate about feline diabetes so I feel really comfortable with her. The raw food is in a container and recommends 3-4 oz per 8lbs. I put a little in the bowel and mixed it with his dry food and he was not down...turned his nose up at it...actually they both did and Renfield likes wet food.

michelle was the 350 before any insulin was given? also what insulin does she suggest..i am sending out package and need to kwno?

Hi Michelle

Glad you are posting :) Please continue to post online here so that you can get the maximum amount of help/reviewers :)

While there are many benefits in feeding raw food, not all cats will eat it. Mine sure wouldn't, nor will they eat some of the higher quality canned foods. So we do what we can with fancy feast and similar foods.

Newly diagnosed diabetic cats are always hungry so you should feed your cat as much as he wants but without causing a huge weight gain. Once the blood glucose levels are better regulated with insulin, the excessive hunger will go away.

Try mixing a little raw into canned food. If your cats eat that, you can slowly increase the amount of raw and decrease the canned until they are eating only the raw. You can also try sprinkling crushed up freeze dried meat treats on top of the raw/canned mix to encourage the cats to at least take a nibble. I used freeze dried raw and gravy canned food to get my rescue civie to eat raw food. She didn't like it at first but after a week she was eating just the raw food

You can also try different brands of raw. Sometimes a cat will eat one brand but not another. My civies will eat Nature's Variety raw but not Primal Pet (though one did eat it for awhile before turning his nose up  ). Neither will eat Rad Cat.

Some cats just won't eat raw no matter what. Low carb canned food is just fine.

Good news on the Fiend front...Since his blood sugar was only 350 and he has no keotones (spell?) she wanted to try to control with diet...she recommended wet but when I told her about his reluctance to eat wet she suggested we try to mix the dry diabetic food with the wet and ween him down slowly. She was very happy to hear that I am going to be testing at home so she recommended that we work with the diet this week and keep a chart of his levels and check in with her next week to see if we need to put him on the insulin. This woman was awesome!!! Way more concerned about Fiend than my financial state...he did eat the food although he tried to eat around the wet...it was actually kind of funny
