To the point: Does anyone feed raw to a cat with probable chicken allergies? Fresh rabbit available, I want the bone in for her teeth. I have a source for fresh rabbit butchered to my specs & lamb is readily available at the grocery store.

Background: Maus seems to have an intolerance or allergy to something in the Dr Pierson raw w/bone recipe. Symptoms include on & off rashes around her eyes, watery eyes & almost daily vomiting water & fur, rarely undigested food. I put her on Ziwi Rabbit & Lamb & she's much, much better; rash gone, eye nearly normal, no vomit except for the rare grass & fur.

More: Maus has eaten nothing but Dr Pierson's raw chicken thighs w/ bone for her entire life. I have a good grinder, follow the recipe to a T & have made adjustments as she has over the years. I now remove 1/3 bones, 50% skin & sear the outside (faster than bake method). I admit that I don't buy organic thighs due to the cost and not always available. I also follow the vitamin list from http://www.catnutrition.org/ since she follows Pierson closely & her site & recipe seem more current.

Need advice:
I'd love to get her back on some sort of raw diet, if even partially.
I need to figure out if it's chicken and/or egg or something else.
I'd prefer to not use a premix supplement as most are for meat without bone

I'd also like to find a more economical chicken free alternative to the Ziwi for long term as backup

I will chime in to say that I do use the food fur life premix powder. I have read as a cat ages the bone isnt as good for sourcing the calcium. Harder on older cats bodies. I know food fur life mix uses egg shell for that. And if egg allergy might not be best thing.

I hope you can find the source of allergy! I am sorry I couldnt be of more help.:bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

Thanks for the reply. I haven't had issue with calcium & my Sr cats & the bone keeps their teeth super clean.

Recipe adjustments for rabbit would include egg yolk replacement, whole/jyst meat ratio (whole rabbit is bonier than chicken thighs), possible liver suppliment (is there enough in the whole rabbit)

I found it very difficult as well to cook any other raw without supplements except chicken. Since we believe Chico is as well allergic to chicken, we had to switch to turkey, rabbit and pork. All of these will not have liver as readily available as for chicken, the bone for turkey is a pain to grind and rabbit is much more bonny than chicken, and removing meat from the bone is very challenging (without wasting a bunch). I wish we could do bones as well but the supplements make it so much easier from the long term perspective as well. Good luck no matter what you decide to do :)

Quail, duck, Cornish game hen, other small game birds such as guinea fowl?

Neko got kangaroo, venison, turkey, lamb, buffalo, elk, pheasant, beef, rabbit, duck in addition to chicken. I think I tried goat and wild boar too. Some of it was premanufactured raw (larger animals meats made with buffalo bone powder). Some manufacturers mix different kinds of bone/organs. For example kangaroo with goat organs cause kangaroo organs too hard to get here. Some I made with EzComplete or TCFeline, which also uses eggshell calcium. Neko was also dealing with CKD and needing lower phosphorus at this point.

I also feed food fur life, but I partially cook my proteins. As you probably know already chicken is the number 1 allergy and my cats are no exception. They turn into Itchy and Scratchy so I cut it out of rotation a while ago. Chicken thighs are perfect for cats as far as fat content but so is 85% ground turkey and it’s low on the allergy list. And while you wouldn’t want to feed ground turkey raw, you could cook it to about 150 degrees or so. It’s super easy to prep, does not require any additional processing, and makes for a great filler in combo with other proteins.

As far as any allergy to egg yolk and shell in the FFL premix, my cats are fine with it. You can order a sample from them and try it out.

Good to know about turkey, I'll try adding when I get to that stage, still stabelizing. I have a grinder & now have 2 good sources for whole butchered rabbit. Could be a winning combo.

I'd like to stick to the Pierson recipe, but it has eggs, I imagine for the fat & some micronutrients. Does anyone have a good substitute for egg yolk? Might duck eggs be better? I don't feed the white, they're not great for cats so I keep them for myself :p

Wow, that's a wonderful variety. Where do you source the game animals?

I don’t think you’ll find a substitute for egg yolk. It’s natures perfect food! ::
Eggs are a nearly perfect food, and the yolk contains the bulk of that nutrition, with almost every essential vitamin and mineral our cats’ bodies need. Egg yolks contain an impressive combination of nutrients, including omega 3s, antioxidant minerals, high biological value protein, amino acids, vitamin D (important for bone building and as an antioxidant hormone), and is one of the foods highest in choline. Yolk is an essential component of the prey model raw diet due to its high choline and vitamin D content.

I've been looking into turkey, but they all have rosemary added. Is that a problem for cats? I've read lots of mixed opinions. I'm getting a little desperate!

One of my kitties has IBS and can't tolerate poultry. They had been fed chicken and turkey most of their lives until Gizmo started developing symptoms. I fed him raw -- pork or lamb -- and used FoodFurLife for the supplements. With your kitty, I don't know if the egg shell would qualify as "chicken". It didn't bother Giz.
