I've been trying to find posts on raw diets here but only one or two people seem to post about it. Not that I don't trust you two, I do! But I am hoping for a larger cross section.

Does anyone know the carb content of Primal, Vital Essentials, and FoodFurLife? Also open to info on others.

How is it working for people? Do you like it?

My cats LOVE when I make them chicken and liver blended together for a snack If I could make it their diet, save on canned food, and have at least a slightly better idea of what they are eating, I'd like that. But is it the better idea for a diabetic (maybe hyperthyroid) cat and three so far healthy but 14 year old cats with arthritis? Is a standard fancy feast diet the better choice? There is not much info out there. A lot of vets scared of it but given my experience with vets and diabetic cats so far, I have much less faith.

Hi Mialia, Idjit is on a raw diet with FoodFurLife EZ Complete supplement. IMO this is the best diet he has ever been on. He is playing more than ever before, is very enthusiastic about his meals, his coat is so healthy and all the 5 Ps are strong. He has his preferences regarding the meat base, he isn't a fan of pork apparently. So far we have used chicken breast & thigh, turkey breast & thigh, beef chuck and pork loin. They recommend offering different meats alternating between lean and fattier parts.
I don't have info on Primal or Vital Essentials, but you can check out the information on the FoodFurLife website
http://www.foodfurlife.com/ I did a lot of research before sending for the sample packet to see if he would even eat it.
This is a nutritional chart from the website and you can see the carb values are more than acceptable.

They also offer a discount if you buy 4 or more bags of supplement at a time.
I know that @Bobbie And Bubba and @Djamila use the FFL EZ Complete supplement, and I have consulted with both for more information and support. I did a long transition to the first meat, then followed the directions for introducing each new or variety of protein. Only one incident of runny poop, unfortunately offered a bit too much too fast. But we just started over and all was resolved.
I use my food processor, a little food scale and small glass baby food jars (that I found on Amazon) to freeze the food in. That way I know exactly what the portion size per meal is. You can also freeze in ice cube trays and keep the food cubes in a freezer bag, thaw in fridge as needed.
I am able to control the grind of the meats, Idjit likes chunks! so I mix some in the finer grind. I like not having all the cans, although I still have a few FF cans on hand for emergency meals in case I run low on raw food. It takes me very little time and effort to mix up a pound or 2 of food at a time. He gets his raw chicken gizzards and hearts to help keep his teeth clean, so Idjit is a very happy camper.
Hope this helps.

I've ordered the bag. I have four cats so I guarantee at least one will eat it, so I just went for it. Thanks for the feedback!!!

Super, be sure to read the information on the website. There is a lot to get through :) I have visited many times for refreshers, and I learn something each time. The transition process is very important, as Idjit's stinky pantaloons at one point really hit home! Let us know how it goes and if we can help further.

Primal and Vital Essentials both post their nutrition info on their websites, and both are quite acceptable for our sugar cats. I have a slight preference for Vital Essentials just because their ingredient list is so clean and simple. I feed the dog version - mini patties - because my cats didn't like the nibs (and neither did I to be honest). I also feed the FoodFurLife and that is my favorite.

If you stop over in Seattle and go to All the Best pet stores, they have several other local raw foods that are really great as well. There is one quite near the airport if there's a way for you to keep it frozen for the flight back home.

As Lou said, the transition process is very important. My cat liked the FoodFurLife immediately, so I just started feeding it to him. He didn't have liqui-poo, but he ate it for two days and then refused it. I had to give him a break for a week, and then start again using their transition process. It was worth the time to do it right as it impacts his coat and energy and demeanor in such a positive way.

Another good food is Small Batch. That’s what I use as well as Primal. Not many around me carry Vital Essentials for cats. When I’ve asked I was told cats don’t like it much. I bought it once and young cats did like it but too hard to find. Small Batch is mostly 97% protein.

Thanks everyone! I'll keep you updated! My new roommates cat moved in, we are still SLOWLY doing introductions but she's very obese so we are excited to get her on the same diet as my cats and help her lose weight. Seeing my diabetic boy has opened roomies eyes to the reality of diabetes in cats.
