Raw diet-problem grinding bones?

Hello everyone
So, I got my Tasin today and whipped up a batch of cat food. When I was done and cleaning up I noticed an awful lot of bone debris left in the tube of the grinder-stuck after the blade/before the plate. I'm using the 4mm hole plate. Is this normal? Do you grind 2X to make sure you get all of the bone or do you just expect the loss?
Also, I'm cooking slightly like Dr Lisa suggests and am wondering if you base weights of the meat/bones/skin/liver for the recipe before or after you cook them. It does seem to change the weights, especially with the liver.
Thanks
Jennifer

PS-the kittens are doing great! The absolutely adore Guinness (drooler), much to his dismay! For some reason they like to play with his tail at 3am. He will usually look at me with a face that says "who decided kittens were a good idea!"

yep, you get some bone remains. it is not enough to make a difference. I have never cooked the meat. no time as I make #30 at a time but I do rinse mine very well. do not think she mentioned cooking when I first started making food and I have been doing it for several years with no ill effects.
I cut mine all up and weigh it. then I add eggs and liver and supplements according to that weight

yes this will happen. I just toss whatever gets caught up in the grinder out.

depending on how much you are making, you may want to batch them. For example, make 3 or 4 chickens, take the unit apart, remove all debris, wash and make the next batch. I say this just to protect the unit from wear and tear.

Also, again, just to protect the unit, you may want to chop (I bought a good cleaver) the chicken and bones to break it down and then run it through the grinder. You don't have to do this, as this becomes the labor intensive part.

Figure on the raw weight since you will be adding the drippings back in, plus, you will probably adding a tad more water to make up for what is lost in the cooking process. (I need to add this info to my web page.)

Discard all bone/cartilage material left in the grinder.

Also, I agree that it may be easier on the grinder to clean it out periodically when doing large grinds although I will often grind 25 lbs at a time without cleaning it out.

Jennifer,
I just received my grinder and whipped up about 3# Friday night. I have ordered the vit. and such and should get them this week. I am not too worried about the ratio yet, as we are still in transition. I am going to pick up approx. 85ea babyfood jars and store the chicken in the freezer in them. They are 4 & 4.5 oz jars. I will be incorporating 2 oz at a time for my girls. This machine was wonderful!!! I did notice bone left in mine as well, and just threw it out when I was cleaning it up. Good idea to clean during processing if doing alot.
BTW....how are the new additions doing???? The pix you posted were sooo cute!

Thanks Dr Lisa! It is much easier to not have to weigh after cooking!

Ohbell-the monsters (I mean kittens!) are doing great! They are a lot of fun and oh so cute, although I do catch myself every now and then wondering whose idea it was to get kittens and not some 10yr old who would be content sitting in the sun all day-usually that thought comes as the kittens are chasing each other at high speed around the house or attacking me in the shower! Basically they are either crazy or super cuddly with the loudest motors! Unfortunately for Guinness (drooler) his tail is a favorite toy at 3am. I'm very impressed with how patient he is with them. They also love Bear's (drooler) tail, but usually only when its wagging (she's a golden, so lots of feathers!)
I did make my second batch of food on Sunday-I made 14lbs. Since they are growing kittens they are eating about 8oz each a day, so I'm going through 1lb a day. The first batch I only made 3lbs and realized afterwards that only was for about 3 days! I guess just like kids, they'll eat me out of house and home! I need to get a video of them at feeding time, they sound like little raptors waiting for food!

Jennifer,
My Monsters LOL - seem to love the fresh chicken Friday nite, but are not that interested in it Saturday?????? What grind plate did you use? I used the med. and felt the food, I did not seem to feel the bones, but I put some in the magic bullet with a teaspoon of ff and Sugar Bean ate it??? This will take longer than what I thought!
Wish me luck.
