Hi my name is Karyn,
My cat's name is Stella. My first time posting. Stella was diagnosed a few weeks ago at the time had a horrific abscess which needed surgery.
I have completely switched to canned food which luckily she took to immediately. I only feed her twice a day approximately 109 calories per meal. But she is insatiably hungry continuously. I have had two block cupboards so she doesn't get into her snacks. I give her insulin twice a day with meals 1 unit. She has lots of energy and seems like a normal cat. Urination is about twice a day maybe fist-sized clump.
Just concerned about this ravenous appetite she has it's hard to keep her off the counter tops and out of my face when I'm trying to eat and every time I tried to prepare food. She's in my bed early a.m. everyday pieing at me for the first meal of the day but after I give her that she's ready for more.
I see on here people check glucose levels several times a day I have done it a couple times. One time it was 227 shortly after feeding and another time was like 392 before feeding. I use the Alpha track system.
Just looking for some feedback and advice thank you.

Hi and welcome Karyn and Stella. I'm so sorry Stella was so sick and had to have surgery. Poor baby!
An unregulated diabetic cat is ravenous because he/she can't process the food properly. Here it is advised to offer small, more frequent meals. As the insulin begins to help regulate the blood sugar the huge need to eat should lessen. It's more work for you, but so much better for Stella. Many of us use a timed feeder, or leave out frozen food cubes if someone isn't there to dish it out. She probably also needs more calories to help recover from the abscess and surgery.

It would be very helpful if you would take the time now at the beginning to make your signature. This is Stella's pertinent info that will display with each of your posts. Here is a link on how to do that: SIGNATURE
Then please set up the spreadsheet that we use to track the insulin shots/doses and the BG tests you are getting. Then members can review the data to see how the insulin is working for Stella and make recommendations.
1. SPREADSHEET INSTRUCTIONS
2. UNDERSTANDING THE SPREADSHEET
If you have any trouble setting up the spreadsheet let us know, there are members who can help you.
Please post on the Main Health Forum so that more members can meet you and Stella, and offer some experienced input.
We can help with good low carb wet food suggestions, how and when to test, and offer support every step of the way.

Welcome Karyn and Stella! Glad you found this site, it is invaluable for support and great info on managing diabetes for your kitty.:cat:

Most cats need about 20 calories per pound. Diabetics usually need more food because their bodies can not properly utilize the nutrients. How much does your cat weigh? Is she at a good weight or thin or chubby?

Stella weighs about 7lbs, I feed her 2- 109cal meals per day. She has a horribly ravenous appetite. I've had a glucose curve done I've had to double her doses it doesn't seem to help. I feed her canned food from Basic Instinct. I mean appointment to go back to the vet but the cost is starting to hurt. I used to be able to get overtime but now I can't because I had to keep giving Stella her injections. Been considering giving her away to someone who can take care of her

Basic instinct? Do you mean instinct by natures variety?

If you're testing at home there's no reason for the trip to the vet. Once I started testing my cat didnt go to the vet for a year. Just start a spreadsheet with your readings... We can help with dosing and you can email your vet a link to your spreadsheet to see how it's going.

Ok so first of you could set up a signature that would be helpful. Click on your name at the top right corner and choose signature. Add info such as your pets name, date diagnosed, insulin type, food you're feeding, meter you use, and any other health concerns.

Next, here is the info on how to set up a handy dandy spreadsheet like the ones you see in our signatures. If you need help let us know and someone can help set it up for you.

Yes, Instinct natures variety

Ok... The natures instinct original are OK, but many of the other varieties are over 10 percent carb. Ideally you want foods under 10 carb (under 7 is even better). I have a link to the food chart in my signature.

Okay thanks for the info , I have been feeding her Instinct limited ingredient diet turkey Instinct original beef Instinct original real salmon also the chicken. I stopped with the salmon however after seeing the chart. I will be making a couple more changes in her diet thank you.

Having trouble with the signature part it keeps giving me an error saying one line is too long but I am within the page lines

My experience is that the Signature is limited by number of characters, and that includes space and other characters. I have received that message when I updated my signature to reflect new diabetic cats and transition to GA.
