Ran into a vet in Costco

Last month, in Costco ('cuz that's where I see people I haven't seen in a while!), ran into a vet we used to go to church with. While catching up, I told her about Hershey and some of our frustrations with our vet. I must confess, that I was partly feeling out her views on fd because I remembered at Christmas her husband told me she now works at an office ~20 min from us. Anyhoo - she said some things I liked and some that said we should stay where we are until we find better. She did say I need to get a copy of his paperwork from our vet (which I had been thinking I needed to do) and ask what other tests they had done, to make sure there were no underlying infections.

She pulled out her phone to look up some stuff to make sure she knew which insulins we were talking about - said she didn't like Lantus, but liked ProZinc. Said hometesting is okay. Said she starts her patients out on 1 - 2 units (said she's a fraidy-cat and likes to start low) depending on their weight. Said I could send his SS and she'd be happy to take a look at his numbers and give me her thoughts.

Well, honestly - I was hoping to have things a little more under control before sending his SS, so haven't done it.

AND - ran into her yesterday, in Costco. She was like - you never sent me his numbers....BUSTED! I told her I was hoping to see some sort of clear pattern before sending...She said she thinks we're testing him too much. I thought testing 4 times a day whenever possible sounded reasonable. I would LOVE to have a wand to wave over him to tell me what his numbers are without poking him!

She also suggested we check his urine to see if he's spilling glucose, using either the strips or the stuff Purina makes to put in the litterbox. I had actually been reading about that but hadn't thought it something we needed to do.

She said she still thinks he needs to be checked to rule out underlying infections. She said we may be trying to over-regulate him. (Not sure what that means.)

So, what do y'all think? What is the value of testing urine for glucose? She was saying he may actually be hypo or something that was above my head. confused_cat :YMSIGH: I'm going to send her his SS in the next couple of days. Figured another pair wouldn't hurt?

Sorry if I rambled too much. Thanks for listening and for sharing your thoughts!

I think I remember Kim telling me that if their sugar is high, they dump glucose in their urine. It's a given. Makes sense to me. Do you need to test it? Don't know. It's the ketones I'm looking for!

Believe that is renal threshold or something? Body tries to dump the extra glucose through the kidneys.

If you have bs numbers, you know if they'rw high enough for it to show in urine. If it still worries you though, get the ketone sticks that check.glucose too.
