Ragnar's kidney inflammation (MAJOR worry - no replies??)

Ragnar's BG and creatinine were normal as recently as last summer. (He's on Azodyl, 3x daily; back on Lantus after 6-mo honeymoon, now at 3/4u bid, usual pre-shots in the 300s, nadirs in the mid-100s; also takes Denamarin and other meds that might not be significant here.) In December his BUN and creatinine were slightly above normal - but lower than mine, and both my doctor and Ragnar's said they were nothing to worry about. However, recently he has two urinalyses that showed white blood cells in the urine; the second one also showed red cells and some protein, and for the first time his specific gravity was down. The results both times (I think the first was in early Feb; the second was very recent) suggested a kidney infection; both times he had a culture/sensitivity (yes, with the needle in the bladder!), and both times it came back negative for infection. They even cultured it, but nothing grew.

I know you will need more specific information; I don't have it; asked Dr. to email the test results but she hasn't done it yet. We also have to do another blood test; weather has prevented that and will for some days to come. But if anyone can offer any insight (or just plain sympathy) into what is obviously a kidney inflammation with no infection causing it, I would appreciate it, and will be back with more information ASAP.

He was taking Prosilec for about a year, but I've checked it out, and its side effects, at least for humans, don't include harm to the kidneys. Dr. Jen tried a "human" sulfa drug in December, which caused precipitation of calcium oxalate crystals in the urine (only very small ones - he was x-rayed); I don't know if that could have caused inflammation that has lasted this long. It might be a result of the diabetes; for a while he was bouncing up and down with a high number, 1u, which resulted in a low number, tiny dose, which resulted in a high number next time, on and on. (Doses were what vet told me to give, but they are only human.) I finally said "Enough!" and we got him on a fat 3/4u that's been keeping him stable.

The problem is the kidney inflammation. I will find out about his kidney function as soon as weather permits taking him for blood test (we just had a HUGE late snowstorm), and we will know much more then. Very worried about my darling, though.

Dr. Jen says the next step is ultrasound of his kidneys, but I wonder if that would do more than tell us they are inflamed, and we already know that. I don't want to put him through that for no reason. I do want to find the cause of the inflammation, and treat it if possible.

Blessings,

Shirley and Mr. B cat_pet_icon

PS: His spreadsheet probably isn't up to date. I friend on the Board has been entering his numbers for me because I can't access the Google spreadsheets but hasn't had time lately, and I've sent them to her only up to mid-Feb or so - we have a humongous amount to type in, and will do when we can. Recently, though - as I said - high 200s or low 300s pre-shot, mid 100s at nadir.

No ideas on the medical aspects but just wanted to say I hope you can find out what is causing the problem and that Ragnar feels better soon.

We just had a snowstorm over the last 24 hours also; rain, thunder, lightning, hail, sleet and then finally snow. I thought the calendar said it was Spring??

Shirley, not much help from me either but an US is not bad on the kitties other than they lose some fur ;-) I know how hard it is when cultures turn up negative and you have no clue what is going on. Been there, several times, especially with my one civie. Vet might want to try a broad spectrum antibiotic or glucosamine mixed in with food. Just letting you know you are not being ignored nor is your beautiful Ragnar. I hope you find an answer soon for your boy.

Re: Ragnar's kidney inflammation (MAJOR worry - no replies??

The ultrasound can tell you a lot. If you have the money I would go for it. I am new to Diabetes but not new to Kidney disjunctions. It could be a tumor that only the ultrasound can see or something else.

One of the things that helped my one cat that had similar problems was glucosamine, chondroitin. It is used for arthritis but the reason it is used is that it takes down SWELLING. It helped her a great deal. It took some of the swelling down in the Kidneys. We knew her cause what you need to do is find the cause of it. Easier said then done but the untrasound could be very helpful. The vet also had her on Vitamin e a little more then what was in the foods. You can give to much Vitamin e so if you try to start out slowly. It really did make her feel better.

Dearest Shirley, and, of course, you too, stunningly handsome Ragnar,

I'm sorry your furry boy isn't feeling well.

I don't have any experience with what's ailing Ragnar. But, to echo Hope, an ultrasound isn't invasive at all. Okay, there could be a hit to their pride because of their tummy being shaved... After Giz's ultrasound, when she'd start grooming, she looked so surprised when she got to her bald tummy! Just looked up at me with big eyes that clearly asked, Where's my fur? Told her, it'll grow back. Took her a few days to adjust to it...

Please know we're keeping you and Ragnar in our healing thoughts and prayers, dearest Shirley. And, hope they figure out what's going on soon. It sucks when they're sick...

Much love and our countless hopeful, healing hugs and prayers for you both,
Deb and Nikki -- and, Giz, forever whispering in my heart...
