Dr. Jen told me to test him at +3, +6, and +9, and I will give you those numbers as I get them...

11:30 AM - shot 1 unit (up from 1/2 unit past week); no test.

308 +3.5
316 +6
459 +10

Ouch! let's get that boy down. Do you think you could get a spreadsheet set up? It would be a big help to the advisors. There are instructions on the tech forum.

Plan to do that, hopefully today. He hasn't been back on the juice for long (about a week), never on Lantus before, and we are "starting low, going slow." He'll probably be up to 2 or 3 units by the time he's regulated.

I haven't been doing regular checks yet either -- 1/2u was obviously not enough, just a start, and his reservoir was still filling up. So there was no regular data to put in a spreadsheet. Now I can start doing them.. if he'll let me. It took about a dozen painful pricks to get this last number - don't know why; I warmed the ear and aimed for the vein near the edge, just as always. This will usually get a good drop on the first or second try. I might have to get an Illumavein (awful price for basically a little flashlight, BUT...) and use the lancet freehand. I have a Softclix, which is infinitely better than the Microlet I started with, but maybe freehand I could see the vein better.

Anyway, he's looking at me now like "Iforgive you Mommy, but don't you EVER stick my ear with that thing again!" If he only knew...

Blessings!

Until you get your SS up and going could you list your numbers something like this:

For the people wanting to help you we need numbers to be able to do that.
For now try to do them like the pic above.

Shirley:

Please give us some idea of what Ragnar's numbers are and what your previous dose was. Without that information, it's hard to know if you've started low and whether you're going slow.

I posted those every day as I got them, so started this time only with last night. But to recap briefly, he was up to 500 at DX (from 236 day before DX - we caught it quickly), started that night on 1/2u; at first it brought him down to high 100s, low 200s, but for most of this week he's been in the 500s immediately post-shot (I don't test pre-shot because he disappears and I don't get to give the shot, but immediately post-shot it's not working yet) and 400s at +6 or so.

The previous dose was 1/2 unit, BID. We've doubled it to 1 unit, starting this morning. But as far as starting low and going slow, you can take my word for it.

I can't do the spreadsheet - at least not with Google. They don't support IE 6+ any more, and I don't want to get a browser that won't work with my OS. As far as I know, the slightly newer browsers aren't available any more.

However, the suggestion to post it as a column of figures and add it to my post here on FDMB is very well taken - that is what I'll do.

Thanks for the suggestion - that's what I'll do, not just for now but permanently - until/unless I have time to do it in Excel, and I can't see my way clear to that for a LOOONG time. I can't use Google Spreadsheets - doesn't support my IE6+ browser - but will post them as you suggested. We don't really need help with the doses yet; Dr. Jen had me increase to 1 unit today, and we will stay on that for probably a week, then bump him up again. We are starting low (1/2 unit, hardly enough to help,) and going slow (increasing by 1/2 unit only every week) indeed. It may be several weeks before he's regulated enough to need more advice than "he's not getting enough yet," which I already know!

Blessings!

Sounds good on paper but he's a cat, that has a complex body, their bodies are not so predictable that you can gauge insulin needs in terms of a week at a particular dose. You'll get the hang of it just keep testing and posting numbers.

If you can download an update to IE it will probably support Google documents. The problem with using Excel is that not everyone here has the software. Google docs is freeware and accessible to everyone.

Listing out numbers in your daily condo is fine for that day. It just isn't an effective means of looking for trends. You need to be able to view days/weeks at a time in order to see patterns. The Google SS is color coded and already in a template form. You will not need to create a similar document in Excel. Also, with an Excel document, anyone can change it.

The ss is vital to see patterns, trends in your cat's adapting to insulin. Advice can't be given based on one day's worth of numbers.

Excel sheet will not work because many people do not have MS apps. Why pay for things that can be had from free sources? I used a free app and also google docs until recently when I needed to buy MS office for work tasks. It's so complex to figure out how to keep control of sheets and still share wit others; google docs are quite alot simpler to use.

I don't use IE; haven't for years. Too many problems with it. Get Firefox; it's free and easy to use.

Eventually you won't have much of a choice.

I don't know about upgrading IE but you can download Firefox, and move over all your bookmarks, etc from IE to Firefox quickly and simply. Many people here could help you with the change so that it would not take you long to make the transition, and it would be worth it to support your kitty's numbers and get more eyes on his progress.

I'm not so sure Firefox is better, Gayle. I posted a question in tech forum: could people hear the music on my web page? Those with IE could hear it; no one with firefox could - and it's a simple MIDI file!!

I know not many people have Excel, but I can save the spreadsheet in Adobe Acrobat - and almost everyone has the free Acrobat Reader. Better than upgrading IE, since 7 isn't available any more and the newest one will probably work only with (shudder) Vista.

Blessings!
