Hi everyone! I’ve been on this board for I’d say 3 weeks now without making an account, I was going through a lot of the resources so that I got what was necessary after my baby Quiznos (she’s turning 11 in July) was diagnosed with diabetes. I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone here for the resources that have been shared, when I was first told that she had diabetes and I had to get insulin and do a lot of different processes I got extremely overwhelmed and scared, I also have my mom going through a big surgery this upcoming week so I felt like those who I love deeply are hurting and it was a very intense time for me.

Quiznos used to be a stray, I got her in 2018 when she was 7. She had this huge gash on her armpit but was still the sweetest girl so I saved up all my money and took her to the vet and took care of her until her gash was completely healed and closed. At this time, I found out that she has FIV and the first vet I saw told me it wouldn’t be worth it to save her but I didn’t believe them and everyone else actually told me how she can live a nice and healthy life, I wasn’t going to give up on her.

Up until now she has been healthy, no issues or sickness since the gash. We (boyfriend and i) have another cat, Rickie, and they’re usually alright with each other, but it seems like they played a bit too rough and Quiznos had a small puncture wound in the same area again, that’s when it all went downhill. Not too long after finding the wound, Quiznos started showing signs of having issues peeing and dehydration. I could see her trying very hard to pee but nothing would come out and when she would pee it would be either on the floor or on clothes in a laundry basket. I took her to the vet and they stapled her wound shut but the vet wanted to check more because her glucose levels seemed too high for it to just be stress, and that’s when I found out she had a UTI. I got the antibiotics and I was able to take care of Quiznos’ UTI but during that process that’s when the vet confirmed for me that she had diabetes. this was all in a span of a month in December, it was very scary because I didn’t want to think about not being able to spend Christmas with my little baby! I cried and cried and cried until my headache hurt more than my heart, it was devastating.

I am currently administering Lantus to her. I had to get the vial, which was originally $314 at CVS, but thanks to the amazing and kind pharmacist, he lowered it to $99. I feel truly blessed and grateful that he did that, because if not I would not be able to afford rent. Quiznos got her first shot today and she is doing really good. I guess my main question would be about how to use the glucose monitor properly, I’ve read the manual but I’m still a bit blank about it.

i accidentally got two different ones:
- CareTouch Blood Glucose Monitoring System
- True Metrix Blood Glucose Meter
I would like to know how often I should be doing glucose testing, and what depth should I use for her? Thank you all so much, so sorry if I wrote too much, I’m very excited and happy to be here and be part of such a supportive community. Thank you. ♥️

Hi there, Lantus is great that's what we are using for Mr. Hendrick. I am brand new to this whole thing myself, so I can't give you (nor should I) any advice but I did want to offer a word of encouragement -- each day it seems a little less overwhelming. We are not even two weeks into this thing and giving the insulin is already nothing at all. And Mr. Hendrick has improved so much in the past week with regular dosing!! To see him somewhat back to his old self warms my heart.

I’m so so glad he’s doing so much better! I absolutely love his name! Mr. Hendrick sounds so classy and fancy! I wish you so much happiness and I hope for your kitty to be able to go into remission ♥️♥️♥️

That’s so cute!!! With my other cat, Rickie, if he’s being naughty we bring out his middle name! We’re like Rickie Baby Cakes what are you doing!! :D

Hi and welcome.

Here is a link on how to hometest it is not a bad thing to have two meters as it is good to have a back up. When you are asking about depth you mean the lancet right. When starting out it is best to use a large lancet and you may need to go deeper to get enough blood but it gets easier with time and some people just poke by hand.

As to how often to test, at least prior to giving insulin as well during the cycle, ideally at the nadir (low point). But it also depends on the dosing protocol you wish to use https://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/thr...-low-go-slow-slgs-tight-regulation-tr.210110/

Also if you sould like to get the most out of this forum it would be great to keep a spreadsheet and add some additional information about your kitty on your signature. See here

Also if you go to the Lantus section of the forum there is a link where you can ger insulin more affordably.

Feel free to ask as many questions as you need:D
