Quitting Dry Food question

So I decided last night to switch Milo's dry food from DM to Evo. He hasn't been eating a ton, maybe half a cup a day. And then somewhere between half a can to a full can of DM canned(gravy and regular combined). I've been slowly leaving less dry food out and encouraging him to eat more canned. Just now I put the canned food bowl next to the Evo bowl and he picked the canned. So I am thinking maybe I will not leave any more dry out.

Would this be too dangerous? He is getting 2 units of Lantus. Would it be safer to keep doing less and less dry rather than just take it away? I am terrified of the whole hypo thing. I stare at him a lot and every time he twitches I shriek SEIZURE inside my head. I am so afraid I am going to do something wrong and he will die. He threw up on Saturday and it looked a little pink so I am worried about that too. I hope it was just because of his fractured tooth but I don't know.

I don't have dosing advice, but you are right in being concerned with taking the dry food away completely. It can definitely drop BG numbers significantly. However, you are hometesting which is the best way to keep Milo safe so that's going to help a bunch. It looks like his numbers are pretty high at this point. Hopefully a seasoned elder will come along to offer up a dose adjustment if needed. The more numbers you can get, the better. Is there a way you might be able to get some tests in during the PM cycle?

I know this is pretty scary. You have a little life dependent on you and you want to get everything right. But try not to worry. Keep asking questions and go slow. It will get easier as you go :YMHUG:

Milo is high enough (500s) that your plan for gradual reduction has a margin for him to come down before you'd likely need to change the insulin. Just be sure to get some mid-cycle values as near the nadir as you can - that's the most important number as it is used for doseage adjustments.

For the nadir, how do meals factor in? I keep wanting to test him for it but he gets hungry like an hour before I want to do it so I don't know if it will be right. I know I can wait with his food but I keep thinking if I don't give it to him he will get ketones or his number will go too low(even though it's been high).

I haven't tested him for ketones yet. My vet never even mentioned that. I am terrified about that too. I think I have read the symptoms for that about 12 times today. I am going to get the testing strips today.

If you free feed, what you get is what you get - he'll eat if/when he's hungry.
If you use a timed feeder, test before the next mini-meal.

Low carb canned may spike roughly 100 points (give or take) within 2 hours; just note the time he last ate with respect to the time of the test.
