Quick Question about remission..

Stanley is on day 9 of his trial otj, numbers were looking good until I did a test this afternoon. He tested at 169 (we were away overnight so I didn't get a number last night nor this morning) What numbers should I be aiming for while he is not on insulin? 60 - 130?

This is our second attempt at otj, the first back last summer only lasted 18 days....perhaps he just needs the tiny tiny dose always?

Normal for a cat on a human meter is between 50-120 on average although I do have a couple civies that run in the high 40s. We consider a cat OTJ when they have been off insulin for 2 weeks and staying in normal numbers with a majority of those numbers being double digits.

Hello - I have a microdose cat too - bailey - see my SS below. You might want to reduce him a bit more gradually before going to zero. If you play with the syringe you can twist the plunger to get drops out. Plus if you play with the pressure of the syringe there is a little flexibility there that gives another drop. So you might find a few doses below 0.25 but that are more than 0. I would give those a try. I dont think he is quite ready for OTJ.

Whats the carbs in Walmart special kitty?

Thank you for your responses, from what I see on binky's chart, the special kitty is 5 carbs.

I will test him again before feeding him tonight, depending on what he is at, I am thinking I will go back to what I was giving him.
I would much rather have him on a small small dose then have his numbers rise up again.

Wendy - I had a look at your spreadsheet for bailey, I see you've been giving drops for quite awhile!

Yeah Bailey was undiagnosed for a year before we got him so I dont expect him to go OTJ.

I am not a dosing expert so I would recommend to post your question on here (http://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewforum.php?f=9)

However if it was me I would put him back on 0.25Iu and if he holds 50-130 for 7 days then try to reduce the dose a drop. Hold it for another 7 days and then try another reduction if he stays in 50-130. However if at any time he drops below 40, reduce the dose.

Also give him frequent small meals through the day to keep stimulating the pancreas.

But like I said, best to post on the forum above with a ? in your subject line to see what the experts think!

IMHO, I would try to continue microdosing until you are on the smallest amount ( practically 1 drop)
It's what many of us do to give the pancreas support for as long as we can. You want the strongest remission you can get after all....

I am wondering how long he went between meals. You said you were gone.
When you are doing the trial, you want to feed small meals often to put less stress on
the pancreas.
I find that my cat 's numbers start going up more when she goes too long between feedings.
I pretty much make sure she's getting something every 5 hours now. I don't want her to lose her remission status. ;-)


The other possibility to think about is Binky's list is getting older now and we don't have current values on Special Kitty.
The food companies often change formula's.
I would suggest looking at the current chart and seeing if you can find another brand to try for a while, one that we believe the values
to be more accurate/current. (altho' Stanley seems to be doing well so the Special Kitty might just still be as it was )

At 7pm he was 142, so I am thinking I will start his insulin again in the morning.

I used to feed him 3 times a day but now feed 4 - 5 times a day. He gets fed on his schedule when I am away thanks to a wonderful sister who will come over whenever I need her :smile:

I'll have a look at the cat info site and look at perhaps changing his food. Luckily, Stanley will eat anything lol
 
Hi there :cool:

I'll add my voice to the 'small frequent meals' chorus. Black Kitty gets fed every 4 hours, around the clock, thanks to a timed automatic feeder.

To see if his pancreas are able to produce the insulin your kitty needs, if while on OTJ trial you get a blue number, feed a small meal and test in about 3 hours. This will help you figure out if your kitty needs to go back on insulin. If after 3-4 hours he brings himself down, it may be a matter of timing his meals. If not, the pancreas may need some help meeting kitty's insulin needs for a while longer.

There are many kitties here whose pancreas took some time to heal enough to handle insulin needs on their own.
Mine is one of them :cool:
