Hi there! My Roo just had his dental done and it turns out they needed to do 2 extractions and something else with a crown. I'm picking him up later today, and was wondering if you guys have any tips for healing, and also questions I should ask the vet?

I've seen a few threads about meds that aren't good for sugar cats, can someone recap?

Also, I want to wait until after he's healed to contemplate starting insulin (will be checking BG and ketones regularly in the meantime), would anyone be able to advise how long to wait before the infection's effect on is BG is over, and he's down to what his regular without insulin would be?

Thanks!

I can’t speak to the dental issues, but I think high blood sugar will make it harder for your cat to heal. I also believe that it isn’t possible to know what his blood sugar is when he is or isn’t coping with dental issues. If you look at different cat’s spreadsheets, you can see how much they vary, seemingly without any reason.

Thanks Margie, will keep an eye on him. I ended up getting the following meds, hopefully they are okay:

1. Buprenorphine Injection (0.3 mg/ml): Give one syringe (0.28 ml) on the gums twice daily for pain control. Start tomorrow morning.
2. Onsior (robenacoxib) 6 mg Tablets: Give 1 tablet by mouth once daily. May dissolve in wet food. Start tomorrow morning.
3. Gabapentin (100 mg/ml): Give 0.25 - 0.5 ml by mouth twice daily for pain relief. Start tonight.
4. Clavamox 62.5 mg Chewable Tablets: Give one chewable tablet by mouth every 12 hours until gone. Give with food. Start tonight.
