Hello Everyone,
Like the post says I have a few questions and concerns regarding my cat. My cat TY is about to be 8years old and is 14.3lbs (weighed today). He is currently on Lantus 2.5 units 2x a day. his current diet is Fancy feast Classic pate (poultry & beef) His schedule is as follows:
6:30am 1.25 cans of pate specifically 1 can @6:30 and 0.25 @7am Insulin given @7am. (the food keeps him occupied when giving the shot he likes to move a lot)
12:45pm 0.5 cans of pate
6:30pm 1.25 can of pate - 1 can @6:30pm and 0.25 @7pm Insulin given @7pm. (He gets his shots on time daily)
The vet previously had him on royal canin glucose food which was super high in carbs. (they said Royal Canin is what's recommended when I told them I am switching to fancy feast and that they could not or don't have information on other types of food.)
I check his glucose before his evening meal and it was previously running in the high 400's but now anywhere from 300-350 (using the human ReliOn meter). I am starting to fill out the spreadsheet again to keep track.
The vet says he needs to lose weight but I want direction on how to safely reduce his meals. I also will be moving so my sister will no longer be able to give him a mid day snack. The vet says 2 meals a day is preferred for diabetic patients but he meows. He definitely meows a lot from 5:45-6:30 am before his first feeding. I work 6 days a week so I feel bad that I have not been strict with glucose testing and doing curves. I am trying to move things around so I can have a more strict schedule with testing him. (no one in my house is comfortable checking his glucose so I am the only one) So I guess my questions would be:
How do you decrease the cat's food safely?
How did you change from feeding multiple times a day to only 2? Did it help or actually make it worse?
Should I decrease his food on the weekend when I am more at home and test multiple times a day?
I read that I may possibly have to reduce insulin if the reduction of food creates a drop in blood sugar but how do I know how much to drop it?
Thank you in advance for your answers. This forum has been so much help with navigating this diagnosis.
