I posted Saturday about Milo who has been OTJ for 5 years. Did test and he was 477. I spoke with on-call vet Saturday. He said to bring on Monday. We discussed pimple like bumps Milo has on back and tail. He has been drinking more but nothing like when he was first diagnosed. Vet said he'd figure skin issue before addressing insulin possibility again. In two follow up tests Milo has been 314 to 319. He isn't pulling for out but just looks base of tail a lot.
Dr said to be sure if we see one of the other vets in practice that they don't treat with steroids. I'm seeing one of the two I prefer. What is it with steroids and diabetes. Anything else I should ask or watch for.
Milo is acting normal. Still full of energy and normal appetite. Water is about 1/4 cup compared to full bowl daily when originally diagnosed.

Thee should be no blanket prohibition of a steroid. Frequently use of a steroid is required to treat some conditions.
Steroids can cause diabetes and will raise the BG of both diabetic and non-diabetic cats.
You just need a good exam with a competent vet. A good look into his mouthbshould be included.
I myself would get blood work and a urine analysis.

Our rule of thumb is do whatever you need to do to treat the other condition, then adjust the insulin as needed.

If he needs steroids, and it is alternate days or a depot injection, I would recommend ProZinc as you can adjust daily to compensate for the changing numbers. To use Lantus or Levemir with fluctuating steroid levels, you might need a supplemental short-acting insulin on alternate days while keeping the depot insulin stable.

Lantus and Levemir work better with a steady dose, so if the steroid were daily you might be Ok with those.
 
Milo was given antibiotic injection and flea treatment. No visible fleas but when combed the dots had scabs come off. Will do treatments year round. We are going to monitor glucose for 2 weeks before addressing that to see if this caused high numbers.
