I wish I had done more research before starting him on the insulin but...
I am going to try again and change harry's diet to all canned. He is currently eating purina dm dry and getting 2units (u40) Prozinc 2xdaily. I know that he is not regulated because he is still drinking and urinating more, but he is better. I tried a few days ago to switch him over to canned but it didn't work out, I think it was to soon (for both of us  ), I now have all the testing supplies and food I need to try again.
Is this the correct way to switch??:
do not give insulin for 24hrs while switching and do a curve to moniter his bg. I have read that there is a scale for the amount of insulin to give based on the bg# - does anyone have a link for that??
My current vet is not very open to this idea so I think I'm kinda on my own with all of your help of course.
Also I found a treat by wellness called pure delights - here is a list of the ingredients- turkey, salmon, dried chicory root, cultured whey, salt, lecithin, and natual preservative- would they be ok to use as a reward??? Harry is not a big fan of the freeze dried stuff..
And one last question: Is there anyone from MA on here - I am thinking about trying to find a new vet and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions.

Thank you for all your help, it is very reassuring knowing there is always someone around to answer questions :-D

You don't need to skip insulin for 24 hours to do a diet change. You can just closely monitor bgs while giving the usual amount of insulin and slooowly change the food. You don't even need to do a curve while you are changing the diet. A few random bg checks a day, in addition to the before insulin test, is plenty.

That's called a "sliding scale". I'm not familiar with it or if it can be done with ProZinc. Experienced ProZinc users can better answer this for you.

The Wellness treats are fine  Have you seen the list of low carb treats? http://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=9172 It's mostly freeze dried treats on the list but there are some other types of treats as well. Have you tried different brands of freeze dried treats? Some cats will eat one brand but not another.

There's a bunch of MA members  What general area are you in? Inside Rt. 128? Inside 495? South Shore? North Shore? If you're close to Boston (and willing to drive into the city), I can recommend my vet. Send me a PM.

Thanks for the info.
I know that the diet change can make his bg go down drastically - how do you know how much insulin is needed if it starts to go down?

Boston is a little far for me to drive - I live in southern ma - the 495 &95 area.

Member Cjleo live in Middleoboro. Is that close to where you live? If it is, you can send Cjleo a PM and ask for vet suggestions.

If bgs start to go down while you are changing the diet, you could decreae the dose by half a unit. I suggest posting here on FDMB when that happens and get advice from other ProZinc users.
