Questions about civvie Brownie

Hello!

I'm more in the Lantus Tight Reg forums than here but I wasn't sure if I should post this there, so here it is.

My civvie Brownie was doing fine today, meowing for more food and eating it, until about 4pm (central) where she threw up just about everything I fed her recently. She also has very loose poop. I thought maybe get some pumpkin and see if she'll eat that, but I got home after picking it up and dinner, and she's not showing interest in eating anything. I dipped my finger in her food with some pumpkin added, putting a tiny bit on her mouth, and she licked it off to clean her face but that's it. She wouldn't let me do that more than a few times before she got up and walked under my bed.

She's been visiting the litter box very frequently since I got home. Looks like she's trying to go but not really succeeding much. There's some liquid outside the litter box that I need to clean up. She's been in a close to a meatloaf position after visiting the litterbox, with one foot sticking out. I see she just now is laying more on her side and trying to nap.

Brownie's hyperthyroid and on methimazole. Currently a .15 twice daily dose, which I spread on the inside of both ears so she'll absorb the larger dose. We're trying to find a dose that will control her hyperthyroid better. A little underweight too.

Basically, this is a worrying post. She's not doing her normal behavior of eating and if it continues through tomorrow morning I'll try to get her into the vet. I let both Cain and Brownie outside yesterday and other than Cain eating the grass, I don't remember Brownie getting into anything.

I was telling Dad as he got home that I might be taking Brownie to the vet tomorrow and he pointed out that she's drinking water. Which is the first I've seen her do tonight so that's probably good. She feels warmer to me right now. I wonder if she did get into something. I'll call the vet when they open tomorrow.

Oh I realized that I didn't put any questions in that first post. Woops.

(Also, I changed my user ID, in case anyone was wondering, cause I used my other one in several other places and I got struck by a bout of paranoia. This one works better I think. :) )
 
Provide fresh water and don't force eating for 24 hours. 1/4 tablet of Pepcid AC may help if the stomach is upset.

Also, contact the vet in morning - it could be side effects of the methimazole.

My GA civvie Emmy was on methimazole for 5 years before the dose got high enough to cause her diarrhea. I dissolved the pill in a bit of canned food and she'd scarf it right down. I split the dose between am and pm to help even out the control for her and to spread out any side effects. She was 19 when renal disease took her.

I have a gravity water bowl for them (I think that's what it's called) which I just refilled a few days ago. She's had some water out of it at least. Currently she's under my bed in her hiding spot. I checked and she's not meatloafing but laying on her side.

Her Methimazole is the transdermal gel which I am supposed to give her twice daily. She had her morning dose but I haven't applied her evening dose yet. That's in an hour or so.
 
Okay, looks like she might be nauseous. I tried to see if she would like to have some of the "gravy" that's at the bottom of the fancy feast classic cans and she sniffed it and walked off. She came out from underneath the bed for a little bit at least. Brownie is definitely not feeling well. I noticed that her eyes may be watering a little. I have to use a flashlight to see under my bed and I make sure to point it towards her tail so it doesn't bother her.

So Pepcid AC right? I remember this being mentioned before in other condos. What type I need to look for specifically and how do I give it to her? Cats don't do so well with pilling right? You have to give them water after?

This is so weird that it struck her fast. I hope she didn't get into anything yesterday. Until about 4pm she was her normal self and asking for more food. She's at least visited the water bowl twice since then and drank a lot of water. No litter visits that I've seen since she stopped when I posted earlier.

Going to call the vet when I get up later. I skipped her evening dose since I didn't want to drag her out from underneath the bed.
 
Yes, Pepcid AC 1/4 of a 10mg (regular str) tablet, and yes, it's best to give water or some wet food afterwards to be sure it makes it to the stomach.

Hope she feels better soon.
 
Brownie just ate food! She came out from underneath the bed and followed me to the food bowl and meowed a bit. She didn't want the food I was giving her brother, but I opened up a new can and gave her a small amount and she ate it. I gave her a little more and she ate some of it. She's visiting the water bowl again.

I haven't gotten the pepcid yet. Got up a little earlier felt so exhausted to drive and went to sleep a little more. Trying to wake up right now. I put a call into the vet's office and the person who took the call noted the symptoms and is going to talk to the vet and give me a call back.
 
Sounds like she might have gotten into something in the yard. Might be worth wandering around the yard and looking for anything she could eat thats bad - scrap food, dead animals, poisonous plants like day lilies...

Vet called back and he thinks it might be the methimazole causing the issues. I'm going to stop her doses for three days. Then start her back on her original .1 dose and see if it helps her. We may have to up her gradually. She was on the .15 dose for most of a week until this happened. I'll also look around the yard in the areas I saw her in Saturday and see if there is something that she got into. I don't think we have any lilies. It's mostly grass, ants, maybe something under the truck or the sago palms we have.

...Fantastic I just found out they are poisonous. Thanks, wikipedia! She sniffs at palm leaves but I haven't seen them eat them. We're going to move them away from the house soon. They're in a big container as they were being resuscitated after mom failed to keep watering them but the leaves are low enough for her to sniff them. I just called the vet's office back up and the lady there ran the idea that she might have gotten into them to the vet and he replied that she would be a lot sicker than the symptoms we're seeing. She was around them saturday and got sick sunday afternoon.

So I'm off soon to get some pepcid ac for her and should I keep trying to give her the regular cat food I feed her (fancy feast classic pates) in bitesize portions or maybe pick up something simpler for her stomach?
 
She will eat when her tummy feels better ... which may happen about 20-30 minutes after the Pepcid.

You might try dissolving it (1/4 the tablet) in an oral syringe, with half cc of water and giving it that way.
 
I tried to figure out how to do the whole pepcid ac and syringe thing. I wasn't sure how to get her to eat it too even with the syringe but I think I managed to get some of the Pepcid in her. Brownie has been eating a bit more and is coming in to get food but she still doesn't look well. I think she's running a little warm. I'm giving her food with water in it to help.

Wondering if I should go ahead and bring her into the vet if she doesn't get better soon.
 
Remove plunger from oral syringe.
Take 1/4 Pepcid AC and put in syringe.
Put plunger back in.
Suck up some water.
Shake/wait for it to dissolve.
Give to cat.

I think Brownie's looking a little better today. She even got on my bed a little last night. Didn't sleep on the bed long but it's closer to her normal behavior. And as far as I know she hasn't thrown any of her food back up.
 
Well Brownie seems to be doing a lot better today. She's not resting as much and seeming very tired like yesterday. Late last night I thought for sure I was going to have to take her to the vet, but this morning she's more bright eyed and asking more for food. She is going to the litter box and seems to be doing okay that way. She even chased after a treat, which yesterday I would have worried about making her walk more than she wanted to.

The problems I'm running into now is that she's interested in food, but will only eat a little or just sniff at it before looking up at me like I need to give her something else. I got some kitten food (fancy feast) just for her cause she was running without medication and she's a bit underweight now. But she didn't eat much. I did pick up a can of roasted chicken feast fancy feast since I know that has higher carbs. I'm making sure that Cain doesn't get into those cause I don't need him relapsing. Mainly I'm worried about her weight while we're working on her medication. She's so thin it's worrying. I did start her medication back up. Slightly under .1 dose and tomorrow I'll have her back at .1.

Maybe it's just she more interested in food but her stomach isn't ready yet? She's at least eating several times a day so that's good. Should I consider giving her another Pepcid?
