Hey Everyone,
Lucifer has been doing great with his blood sugar and being OTJ. We test him weekly. However lately I noticed him grooming his behind more but no expression of him being in pain. He was doing it again this morning so I checked him and I noticed a wound. I’m calling the vet to get him in ASAP because I think he had an anal gland rupture.

I’m wondering if maybe due to the change over in food we feed Weruva twice a day. But anyway, my question is I am finding everyone is saying to add canned pumpkin to food to help solidify stool so this doesn’t happen. Will the pumpkin cause any type of issues with blood sugar levels and if so is there another alternative?

I can tag a few members for you but
You need 100% pure pumpkin, not the pie filling. Did you take him to the vet yet?

Half a cup of canned, unsweetened pumpkin contains 11 carbs. So, 24 teaspoons are in 1/2 cup. So 11/24 = .458. So not many carbs in canned, unsweetened plain pumpkin.

Having said that, I'm not sure I would begin by adding any "bulk forming" food or supplement to his food right now. This could increase stool size and exacerbate the problem.

For the future though, alternatives (if there's constipation or diarrhea and it's necessary to add additional fiber to the food) would be:
psyllium husk
freeze dried pumpkin

For constipation: Miralax is a starting point. Don't add this in unless you need to soften the stool and make it easier to pass. Start with a literal pinch once a day.

Any help? I really think you need to get Lucifer to the vet though (I know you already are working on that.) It sounds very painful. Poor baby.

Thank you so much everyone that helps a lot. I don’t want to do anything to mess up his progress. I did take him to the vet and it was not related to his glands though the injury was near it. It happened to be some kind of actual injury that may have gotten a blister and burst. They think that it may have been Louf’s sister got him with her claw. They cleaned out the wound and gave him an antibiotic shot that will last two weeks just have to make sure it stays clean. Poor Loufie but he’s on the mend.

Hello! I'm also a fan of Weruva foods and add in a teaspoon or two of their Pumpkin Patch Up once a day. It's more pricey than a can of plain pumpkin but I like that it comes in a small size so I don't waste any. I think it helps for Sugar's poo to be less stinky!
