Questions about Cabergoline

This is hopefully a step forward but I am very nervous. The vet ordered Cabergoline for my Neptune. While waiting for delivery next week, I plan on purchasing a glucometer tomorrow and starting home testing.

I am trying to get a grasp on when to test his BG. Do I test first, then give insulin and the CBG, then test BG a couple hours later? When starting this, should I check him more often? HELP! I hope this makes sense.

You can start home testing before the cabergoline arrives, I would do it as soon as possible. You want to learn how Neptune reacts to the Vetsulin. For example, when his onset and nadir are. Side note: Vetsulin is not a good insulin for any cat, much less one with acromegaly. You do want to give a test before giving insulin each and every time, to make sure it's safe to give insulin. Once you have a better idea of his blood sugar patterns on insulin, you will learn the best times to test him. Curves will help you do that, or at least testing every couple hours until half way through the cycle. Typically Vetsulin's action doesn't last the full 12 hours, so you just need to test until the numbers start going up again, which likely is before +6.

Cabergoline usually takes at least a week to start taking effect, but I've seen a wide variety in cats, some take much longer.

Hi Tricia,
I'm tagging @Wendy&Neko as she has a really good sense of how/when to test. Your spreadsheet doesn't tell much other than you seem to be testing once a day with the exception of a partial curve and no information on the SS about dosing method.

I'm living with an acrokitty who might we be going on Cabergoline in the next while but we have been through hypophysectomy and radiation (SRT). In any case, @Wendy&Neko is the one to ask here about acromegaly and dosing methods.

Good luck. I hope you will be able to share your experience with Cabergoline.

I was just advising Tricia to discuss with you and did a screen refresh and here you are.

@Jodey&Eddie&Blue
hi and thanks! I will share! Good luck with your kitty!
I will be just starting home testing, so that is why my spreadsheet is bare. I won’t get the CBG until next week.

What form is the prescription in? If you won’t get it until next week is it compounded? How much does Neptune weigh? Also what dose is prescribed?

It’s liquid from Wedgewood. I had to borrow the money just to get the medicine and meter and can’t afford to pay the quick shipping. He weighs 15 lbs. I don’t have the dosage they ordered with me at the moment, but they measured by weight.

When you get the dosage, I'd really appreciate hearing the frequency and the amount/pound. I'm in Canada so not sure of the costs. Did you have an IGF-1 test before the vet prescribed the Cabergoline?

IGF-1 was 185. She put him on it per my suggestion.

It is a 15 ml bottle oral
Strength 100 mcg/ml
Dose .7 ml every 48 hrs
He’s 15lb.

$124.50 US not including tax or shipping.
They only ship on business days.

It expires in 6 months and I won’t use all of it.

I hope this helps.

Thanks, for this info. It helps to make comparisons. Neptune's a big kitty. So is Eddie, weighing in a 11kg.
