Hello Feline Diabetes,

I posted a few months ago about my cat Teto who was diagnosed in November. Unfortunately, the situation has not gotten better and has in fact deteriorated quite badly. He is not doing well and has been hospitalised twice in the past month, which is where he is at now. For some reason every time he goes home after being stabilised he is okay for a while but then his ketones build up or something and he becomes very lethargic and has to be taken back. The vet gave him that monitoring thing and he has middling to slightly high numbers, but this event just seems to keep happening with him.

I don't live with him anymore - I am working and in school in Manhattan all the time and live with my partner who is allergic to cats so we cannot take him in. My mother is absolutely obstinate in not listening to my wanting to try to find someone else to take him who knows what they are doing, despite her having to work full time and not having the capacity or finances to support him or the other animals in the house. I have wiped out my meagre savings and am selling some of my possessions to try to absorb the vet bills. I have had a few really bad and sad experiences with trying to keep pets alive over the course of the past decade and I am really anxious and disturbed about this current situation.

If anyone has any ideas about what is going on and how we can get him stabilised, and also regarding his long term prognosis, I would be really grateful. I do not know whether this is also a sign of Teto not being able to make it too much longer either - not that that is even on the table with my mother. I will keep fighting with her to try to see reason with adoption at least, but if anyone knows anything, or at least has an idea, I would be most grateful. Thank you all for whatever you can contribute.

What insulin, how many units, which meter, readings from the past week?
Sounds like an awful situation to be in!

Lantus I believe, 2 units twice daily, although they might be using some insulin out of those pens - a friend of hers gave her a bunch that she didn't need. She's using that new meter that you can scan from your phone; my mother said he was high 200s or so, maybe more maybe less. Sorry I don't know more than that.

High 200 is not that high, but still above the renal threshold.
Is it possible you can get your mom in here?

Is mom testing him with a bg meter? If not we can teach her how. Also she may want to get a ketone meter since he's prone to developing ketones. What food is she feeding?

(Hi from your neighbor across the river in nj)

My feelings go out to you and Teto and I know all about the "obstinate mother". Without judging your mom she has to know this is about Teto and not her.
We'll need more information to help.
Those Lantus pens that your friend didn't need, check the expiry date. It sounds odd that someone just got rid of Lantus pens.
Previous medical history.
Other cats or animals in the home.
What Teto eats and what he might be getting into; plants, dog food, table scraps.
He gets tested but is it twice a day every day?
Something is happening to Teto each time after he gets well, we need to figure out what that something is.
