Hi Everyone,

So, with Cini Mini being down to a drop of Lantus twice a day I have been tring to figure out when is the best time to go .....you know.... "there". I don't want to jinx it

I turn to the trusty Roomp Rand for the answer and I am seeing this:

When the cat regularly (every day for at least one week), has its
lowest blood glucose concentration in the normal range of a
healthy cat, and stays under 100 mg/dL overall
Reduce dose by 0.25-0.5 IU depending on if cat on
low or high dose of insulin

OK, stupid question #1 - What's the normal BG range for a healthy cat? :? I know it's 50 to 120 for a diabetic cat, but normal? What's that?

Stupid question #2 - The next part of that sentence says "and stays under 100 mg/dL overall". Do they mean as an average? Or for the entire 7 days?

Stupid question #3 - I'm already giving a drop. So obviously can't decrease by .25 or .5 IU. I am assuming after the 7 day mark in the "normal" range they want you to do another reduction. But then after that reduction do you go another 7 days?

This may get corrected, but with Scooter-B...The Sequel...
he stayed green for 7 days on what i called one drop...then we went on trial :-D

The first go-round...he saved me the misery of measuring the one drop, and took himself off the juice
at the .25u mark.

THIS IS EXCITING!!!
CAN'T WAIT TO SEE WHAT THE WISE ONES SUGGEST!!!!!

Cathy...there are no dumb questions!!!

1. The normal range for a healthy cat or a FD cat is 50-120.

2. Not an average but most of the time. We really like to see them under 100 with just a few forays to just above it. The Cin Man is still throwing those occasional 150ish numbers.

3. I don't know that you can go any lowe than a drop. But IMHO, I'd want to see him around or under 100 a little bit more before I tried you know what.

Of course...it's always good to get some other opinions and thoughts. But I'd say the majority of kitties I've seen go to the Falls have been mostly in green when they started their trials. But he is looking GREAT!!!!

I was just going to reply with exactly what Marje said. :-D Personally I would want to see all green. And others will probably tell you not to be in a hurry (it's a dance, not a race :-D )

Take a look at Spock's spreadsheet - I'm battling with 1 drop also. Tried to stop the insulin and his numbers rose. As of last night I put a fat on the drop.

Margie,

Are you sure about the range being the same for both healthy and FD? That's why I'm confused because if it was up to 120 why would Roomp Rand (I like saying that name out loud too  ) say "and stays under 100 mg/dL overall" ?

If we're looking for staying green for 7 days then that's the 50 to 99 range. If we're looking for the "normal" range of a healthy cat then obviously that would go in to the blue range for the 100 to 120 part.

Oh don't worry. Not trying to rush things. If Cini has to stay on a drop forever that would be fine with me. Just trying to figure out what the protocol is and when to read the signs that he's ready for...you know

What Marje said.

Generally, we look for a cat to be in the greens as much as possible. There may be a blip or 2 or 3 into the low blues but the lower the curve overall, the better. When a cat goes on an OTJ trial, we want the kitty to have as good a chance for succeeding in the trial as possible.

I'm sure. ;-)

What Sienne said about green....and green is below 100. :-D :-D

Look closely at what it says:
When the cat regularly (every day for at least one week), has its
lowest blood glucose concentration in the normal range of a
healthy cat, and stays under 100 mg/dL overall

I added the bold on "lowest".

OK thanks

I was never good at word problems. They always seem so ambiguous to me.

I will aim to look for 7 consecutive days at green or close to it.
