Hi Everyone,

I have been OJT since April 2012. The last two tests I've done have been creeping up in the numbers with today's being 288!!! Was wondering if this could be the blood strips or the meter going bad/dying or if my vacation from insulin is near it's end. Does anyone know how long these things last or have any suggestions before I really start to freak out? :o)

Thanks,

Tonya

the test strips have expiration dates on the container - what is yours? also if it is an opened container that you are using, yes it could be bad.

have you tested yourself? most likely your meter is fine, but depending on how old your strips are and when they were opened, you may need new ones. certainly worth buying more to be sure.

and don't get caught up on just one test - bg's rise and fall throughout the day ad depending on level of activity, excitement, food, etc. could make it go up or down. if you get one high reading, wait an hour or two and test again, to see if it goes down on it's own.

Glucose may go up after large meals - are you spreading out the feeding using mini-meals? If you don't have one, a timed pet feeder may be very helpful. The PetMate 5 has been used by a number of folks here and is available through our shopping partner Amazon.

Do you have any control solution you could check the strips and meter with?

Is there anything else going on with you cat that could be raising the BG: infection, dental problems? Has your cat's diet changed at all?

My tests were 125 and 121. Also consistent. As far as I can see there is nothing abnormal going on with Tiki. He is acting the same, no changes to his diet, no contraband that I can see. More dandruff than usual tho. And no, I don't have any control solution. Didn't even know such a thing existed.

you have tested yourself and the numbers are lower, so I'd say that even if the strips were giving highish readings, Tiki's numbers are something to keep watching. Relapses happen, so watch for stool and urine output, how eating is done-if seeming to avoid one side of the mouth, anything out of the ordinary.
Infections and constipation and things like pancreatitis can cause higher BG numbers, so it's not necessarily a need for insulin again.
