Question on shipping Lantus

I placed our first order for Lantus with Canda Drugs Online on 9/5. We received the order today. My husband opened the package and reports that the contents were warm; warmer than the ambient air temperature, which was in the low 90s. He put it in the fridge. According to the information printed on the package, Lantus should be destroyed if it gets over 30 C (86 F). It must have been over 90 F. I called customer service and they told me to put it in the fridge for a period of time (I think they said 48 hrs) and then it would be safe to use. She said she could have a pharmacist call me to “explain it better”. I don’t think it’s safe. Does anyone have experience with a situation like this? And to think I paid the additional shipping charge to get it sent from Canada instead of Turkey!

Hi, I have no experience ordering the Lantus online, only the syringes and strips. Why not call a local Pharmacist at say Walgreens or a CVS and see what he/she says. Let's see what other say that may have ordered online.

i don't know, but i think a call to the Lantus corp would answer that question for you. i'd want another bottle of lantus, personally - it's too expensive for one reason, and you don't want to lose regulation by using bad insulin, for the second reason.

Lantus.com how to store
Before you open your LANTUS® insulin
If you have unopened vials of LANTUS®, or an unopened LANTUS® SoloSTAR® pen, store them in the refrigerator (36°F – 46°F). They can be refrigerated until the expiration date. Once the expiration date has passed, your LANTUS® insulin should be thrown away.

LANTUS® insulin should not be allowed to freeze, so don’t put it in a freezer. If you see frost or ice crystals in your LANTUS® solution, you need to throw it away. Keep LANTUS® out of direct heat and light.

If you do call Sanofi, don't tell them the Lantus is for your cat. Lantus does not have a veterinary indication and they won't do squat for you. If anything, tell them it's for your child.

Several years ago I received 3 10ml bottles of humalog insuling via mail. It had clearly not been shipped properly as the ice had melted and the insulin was warm. I called and was able to get it all replaced.

I have also had Lantus shipped to me and it has always been shipped overnight with good packaging and large cold packs that were still frozen when it arrived. It is important that the insulin is still cool and the ice used to pack it is still effective. I think you have the right to request a replacement, particlarly because Lantus is less stable than Humalog.

Re: Question on shipping Lantus - Update

The Canada Drugs Online pharmacist called me and said that lantus is a very stable medication. He said if there are no specks in it and the color hasn’t turned a dark yellow, it should be fine. I’m at work and haven’t opened the package yet, so don’t know what it looks like. Since this is our first order of lantus, I don’t really know what it is supposed to look like. It seems like I saw some discussion here awhile back about particles or color change if lantus has gone bad. Can anyone give me more info along those lines? I also sent Sanofi an email asking about the safety of lantus that had been overheated. Haven’t heard from them yet.

"normal" lantus is a completely clear liquid. looks like water.

if you decide to use this bottle i would want something in writing from the canada drugs online that if it doesn't maintain regulation at least 28 days they would replace it.

although personally, i'd insist on a replacement. if lantus is taken care of people here have used it for up to 6 months. the manufacturer says they'll guarantee it for 28 days. there's no way that anyone (canada drugs/lantus) would do anything to help you after the 28 days, but if the lantus had been taken care of it might last you for months. you won't know how long it might have lasted, even if you get the 28 days out of it.

i just looked at their website: http://www.canadadrugs.com/ flashing under the header one of the subheadings says "90 day hassle-free returns." in the middle of the page it says "No-risk Guarantee."

i'd make them replace it.

we order ours from 99canadadrugs and they do an exceptional job of packing/shipping.

I'm with those who vote that the pharmacy take care of you...
and totally on board with Sienne's suggestion...
It's for your child!
