Question on Relion Micro and old strips

Well, it has been a while since I have pulled out my testing kit. In fact I still have Latte's last strip used in the meter. I am trying to get familiar with it again as I prepare to go to a friends house and test her kitty tomorrow. I actually used the contour with relion as a back up. I figured we could use the relion for her kitty since we need strips and they will be the cheapest to buy last minute.

I noticed I had some strips in the relion pkg. They are of course outdated (12/10). I tried the control solution (exp also 12/10) just to see and found that they work! I got a 172 and 167, and 171. What I dont understand is where my results stand. The instructions say:

"Compare the result to the range printed on the test strip bottle. Make sure the result is within the acceptable range. If the result falls within this range, the meter and test strips are working correctly"

The back of the container for strips says:
L: 27-50
N:91-151
H: 252-420

Does this mean the number I am getting when I try the control solution needs to be exactly within these ranges, or am I close enough? Which range should it be in....the "N"? Do you think these could possibly be good enough to get an idea if kitty has high BG's? I vaguely remember an email discussion w/ my strip supplier for the contour. She had done a great deal of testing and research on outdated strips. She insisted they are fine. I just cant remember how long beyond the date she argued they would be good for. Maybe I will dig and see if I saved those emails.

It would be amazing AND great if these strips, long after the expiration date, were accurate. Kitty is having multiple UTI's and the bean cannot afford vet visits. I want to help her pay for some of it, but being unemployed myself I cant do much. I prefer to spend my money toward a proper urinalysis/culture and blood work than strips!

I hope I remember everything I need:
rice sock
vaseline
neosporin pain relief
30g lancets
3 different lancing devices
cotton make up pads (used to use these to wipe blood)
treats
patience and compassion

Thanks for your thoughts.

I have some outdated Relion micro strips at home (I bought them in late 2009/early 2010). When I get home tonight, I'll test Bandit with them and my AccuChek and let you know if they're within range...

I'm not sure about the strips, Carolyn, but I just wanted to say thanks for helping out this person!

Thanks! I did find the email from my old strip provider (she was also diabetic). Her thoughts were based on what she claimed to be years of testing expired vs non expired strips against each other. I am not saying she is right/wrong. Just saying is all... ;-)
She said sometimes you have to change the year on the meter to coincide with the strip dates. I changed the meter to 2010 and got similar results (164).

wish I had some good strips to test against. But, that is what I am avoiding...spending $.

This is not a cat on insulin. We do not even know if she is diabetic. Just trying to rule out the possibility a cheaper way than at the vet.

Hi Carolyn,

I have about a half of container, maybe about 25, of the Relion Micro Test Strips that are still good that you can have.

Let me know.

awwww (((((((((((Robin)))))))))))))))))
So many hugs to you. I am just seeing the news today for some reason. Under the circumstances, that is very generous of you. Logistically I do not think I could get to your place before the planned time we have to do this. Thank you sooo very much!!!!

GOOD NEWS!
I found a NEW contour meter stashed in my supplies (forgot about it). Ithas had 10 strips (now 9) which expire this month. I tested a strip with solution and got 130 (w/in range). That is close to the 20% variance. If I remember correctly, the relion always tested Latte higher than the contour anyway. I do suspect these relion strips may be good despite being a year past the expiration date. How crazy is that? I may not trust them while trying to regulate a cat on insulin, but I think they will be okay to give us an idea if the cat has high blood sugar.

If all goes well, we can try to compare the results between the two meters. Then I can leave her with the relion and 30+ strips to continue testing if need be.

Julia- I would still be interested in your results, if it is not a problem. I know they are 2 different meters, but it might be telling.

It should say somewhere on the control solution if it's supposed to be high, normal, or low. I have a bottle of low. Dunno about old stips though.

Thanks for that! I checked the control solution and could not find what you were talking about. Then I realized, its a solution for the contour. ohmygod_smile I cant find any for the relion in my stash of stuff. :YMSIGH: So my results are definitely invalid. Only way to know for sure is if they were tested against some strips that were not expired.

Really glad I found those few contour strips!

So I dragged out my old relion kit which hasn't seen the light of day in years, and it turns out I have one strip left, expired in 12/2010. I had a little sake with friends tonight, so I'll wait and try it out tomorrow morning-- I don't want to risk messing up the test.
