My husband and I are looking to put our home up for sale and moving to a different home. It is ONLY the beginning stages of thinking about it, but one thing that has me extremely stressed is mocha .. She is OTJ for just over a year now and seems to be cruising along almost always in the double digits. But could the stress of moving actually take her out of remission?? nailbite_smile I'm so nervous about it, I have confessed to Peter that I would rather stay here, then move if it means mocha back on insulin ... Has anyone successfully moved with a diet controlled diabetic cat? Any and all stories are appreciated!!

I think it will totally depend on the individual cat. I moved 8 states and something like 900 miles with my two (well before Mikey became a diabetic) and they settled in just fine. The vet gave me a mild tranquilizer to give them before the flight and they both did well. There was a period of adjustment since there was a third cat here that we didn't have back home, but nobody seemed to be terribly stressed by the situation.

Great, thank you for your input .. We would hopefully just be looking within ten miles or so of our current home, so no flight needed .. whew! thanks again!

Haven't moved either of my diabetics but I have moved cats....alot!

What I have found that worked the best and seemed to stress them out the least was to keep them in a single room at the old place, usually the bedrom which I would leave that bed set up until the last moment, and while the bed was stripped for the move I would leave an unwahsed blanket of comforter on it, so they had all the smells of home. This also keeps anyone from scooting out the door while boxes and other stuff gets moved.

If it is a short move I would move all the non-essential stuff first and get that all set up in the new place. Then the day of the move, put them in their room, pack up everything but what is in there room, move that, get all the big pieces where they are going to go, get litter boxes, their dishes, condos, trees etc set up, then go back pop them in their carriers load them up and put the blanket that they had in their room over the carriers. Then move the furniture from their room get it set up and bring the cats over last. Put them back in the now new room with the familiar stuff from the old house and let them out in there to explore once they are relaxed in their new room, open that door and let them explore the new digs.

I also usually set up several Feliway plug ins in the new place to help with the transition to the new place and so far, no problems with anybody getting anymore stressed out than a trip to the vet's.

Thank you .. I had it in my head the way you described how you do it .. I thought if we could move them at the last possible moment and put them in a room that is already furnished with "old" home belongings, they might not freak out as much .. This is the only home they've ever known and they are 8 and will be 9 in September .. I'm so just nervous .. I don't want mocha to go back on insulin, and I don't want them being freaked out and to scared to come out and explore ..
