Question on Lantus Potency

Hello!

So, I have one pen of Lantus and I'm giving 1 unit a day and have been for about a month now. Of course, with a dosage that small, my supply hasn't dropped much and the expiration says that it's good until 2023. This probably seems like a dumb question then, but I asked my vet and they said that insulin can lose its potency after a while and it's looking like mine is definitely going to last a while, so I guess I'm feeling a little paranoid. Has anyone had any experiences where their Lantus insulin lost potency, and if so how long did it take?

Thank you, and sorry for the probably silly question. The reason I'm asking is because I was offered another pen of Lantus recently and I'm not sure if I should accept it. It's expensive and I don't want to put someone out for no reason. My cat still has a chance of remission. It's early days.

Edit: I'm realizing I probably should have posted this to the Lantus thread. Whoops. I'm sorry! I haven't been on a forum in a long time.

You should be able to use pretty much every drop out of a pen as long as it's kept refrigerated. On 1 unit twice a day, one pen would last you about 5 months.

The only reason the paperwork says to discard after 28 days is because when the manufacturer asked the FDA to test it, they only asked for it to be tested for 28 days so legally, that's what they have to tell you. Also, humans tend to toss the pen in their purse or pocket so it's not being refrigerated.

4-6 months is what we usually tell people when they ask how long it's good for. This is where the spreadsheet is very handy...if the numbers start to creep up with no other reason, it's time to suspect the insulin may be losing efficacy

And there are NO silly questions!!

Here is the link to set up your spreadsheet to track your cats BG and see how the insulin is working for him and how low it's dropping your cats BG
If you ever need help with dosing, it's also at the end of everyone's post
Mine says Tyler's spreadsheet, you can also look at other members SS
With Lantus there is 2 protocols to follow either TR(tight regulation) or SLGS ( start low go slow)
This will determine when to adjust the dose, if you need help setting it up just ask
