Question on Diabetes and Dental Procedures

I checked Lucky's mouth and am 99.9% sure I found her problem. The back tooth on her left side is really yellow and the gum above it is really red. So she will probably have to have it removed tomorrow. Poor baby! Is there anything I need to know before she goes in for dental? Anything I need to advise the vet to do or not to do? I just don't want her to relapse.

I am sending her with some of her fancy feast tomorrow so after she has her dental done and wakes up she can have some food! So please pray that she comes out of the dental ok and is back to herself!

I hope your vet will xray her mouth. Some cats have FORL http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feline_odontoclastic_resorptive_lesion Mine does. They need mouth xrays to see the
cracks.

If she is on insulin, you will want to reduce her dose in the morning or possibly skip if she is already in low numbers.
I don't see a spreadsheet for her.

Anesthesia can lower bg numbers so you don't want insulin on board too if she's already in green numbers.
It's also good if you can leave your meter or ask them to test her during the procedure or immediately after.

The food is a good idea... just ask them to feed her what you bring,.
My own vet didn't want me giving wet food after the dental. ( He didn't know how much diet affects FD) He knows now.
 
She is not on insulin. She is in remission since September. will she be in danger of going too low? I can still have him test her though. I'll bring her meter along .
 
Don't know if you saw my response to your other post.. make sure you get pain killers for a good few days and a post surgery antibiotic in case of infection. You may see an appetite reduction due to the antibiotic.
 
I picked Lucky up from the vet. All he needed to do is a dental cleaning. Apparently she had lots of tartar buld up around the gums which irritated them. He did put her on amoxicillin. I gave her a little food tonight and she ate it all up. I only gave her 1/4 of the can didn't want her to eat too much and then throw up afterwards. So if she's good in an hour or so I'll give her another 1/4 of a can. She's had amoxicillian before and it has not affected her appetite. So hopefully she will be all good now for a while.
 
I'm so glad I read this! My vet ordered me to stop giving Penny insulin yesterday after a rather fast drop in numbers about 2 1/2 weeks into her switch from Lantus to Lev. I kept dropping her dose down from .75u (which I was trying to increase before the drop) and she's been in the green the past couple of days on just a drop of Lev in the AM and a no shot at night b/c PMPS was too low for my comfort.

Dr Moreno looked at her numbers yesterday..I wanted to take her for a dental before we tried OTJ trial b/c he had noted some inflammation on her gums (and she has horrible breath lol) the day she was diagnosed w diabetes on 9/7/13. He said he wanted her off insulin immediately and to do the OTJ trial and then we can do her dental.

After reading this tonight, I understand why. Thank you for posting this! MisMelzy...I hope your baby is okay! Keep me posted! :)
 
Since coming home yesterday she's eaten almost a whole can. She did leave a little in the bowl but it was MUCH better than it has been the last couple of days. I gave her 1/2 a can today and she at 1/2 of that. So I think her amount to eat at one time is 1/4 of a can. I did see her drinking water yesterday and today. But the last time she had food was sometime on Thursday during the day. They did not feed her at all yesterday. The vet said that the anesthetic can make them nauseated and throw up. My main vet that did her last cleaning and removal of 2 teeth never said anything about no food. So, I gave her small amounts just in case and she did just fine. She drank a little water yesterday, and a little water today. I plan on testing her numbers at 11:30. But yesterday her numbers were a little higher at 87. But I'm sure it was just the stress from being at the vet, and being hungry.

I do have a question. Since she is on antibiotics what can I give her for diarrhea if she gets it? I had a dry treat that had good stuff for the tummy and intestinal tract. But I'm assuming now that I can't give it to her because it's dry. There is stuff at my pet store that is a paste and you put it in their mouth. Not sure if that's safe either?
