Hello,
My cat malachai will be starting Lantus in a few days. He has been on a Vetsulin for 3months with no luck. I purchased the SoloStar pens and heard that using them with a syringe is the best way to go.
I am reading A LOT of different information on how to store the pens after I start using them. I know pens that are not in use should be kept in The refrigerator and are good until the expiration date.... however after I start using a pen, do I put it back in the refrigerator and if so, how long can I continue to use that pen? Do I need to throw it out after 28 days? Thanks!

Deena

Hey there, if you store the pen that is in use ( and a the unused ones too) in the refrigerator, you will get up to 6 months with the pen in use and can use every l.ast drop of it . The unopened pens are good through their expiration date.

A lot of great info is Here about your storing and handling your Lantus .

keep in fridge.... preferably on a shelf and not in the door....
the door swinging can jar the insulin.... some of us use a mug or something to keep it nested.

If you're using them with syringes, which is preferable, then you store the in-use pen cartridge in the refrigerator as well. That way it will last a lot longer...anything up to around 5-6 months instead of needing to be thrown out after 28 days. :)

The 28 day rule applies to human use that are keeping their pens in their pocketbooks , brief case etc The solo star pens were designed for that purpose but, for us using for kitties on much smaller doses, we can get a lot longer by refrigerating them ( I used one for 6 months)

Hi Deena,
Put one of those little camping "zipper-pull" thermometers in the container with your pens so that you will always be certain that they don't get too cold. Some refrigerators are not entirely trustworthy!
Good luck with Lantus.
