We switched to a new vet clinic when we moved here a few months ago and the vet suggested switching to Fluoxetine instead of the Amitriptyline that two of my cats have been taking for the last 1 1/2 yrs.

I was just wondering if anyone that used it for their cats had noticed any side effects-good or bad?

I started them on it last Thursday so it has been only 4 days, and I know that with any new drug there is always a week or two when first started for them to get used to it. I just thought I'd ask to see if anyone noticed anything with their cats.

Thanks for any info you can give me.

we actually noticed no side effects on the prozac whereas on the ami Jr was a zombie, thus the reason we switched to the prozac.

what was the reason the vet wanted to switch to prozac? was the ami working? any problems with it for you guys?

My cat Andy(GA) took prozac a couple years ago for spraying urine inside the house. He was a neutered male that was spraying inside I guess after seeing cats outside that would set him off. He was about 10 when he started it. He took prozac for about a year. I never noticed any side effects from it. It did help control the spraying.

Two of my cats are on Prozac, Pumpkin is diabetic, Charlie Cat is not.

For Charlie, the difference between unmedicated Charlie and Prozac Charlie was AMAZING! It took about 3 days to notice a little, 6 days to notice a lot and 2 weeks for AMAZING!

For Pumpkin, I, unfortunately, don't really notice much difference between Prozac and no-Prozac.

Neither cat has any noticeable side effects.

The new vet said she had had better results with the prozac for her clients than with the Ami. When I was gradually reducing the Ami before stopping we noticed the cats had lots more energy and were up almost all day! I didn't notice any problems with it while they were on it, other than the sleeping a lot.

Bailey is on Prozac, and I had the same experience as Cindy and Jr. On amitriptyline she was a zombie, slept all the time, very thirsty, no purring. On Prozac she is her old self only calmer, and more willing to use the LB.

Scruffy was on prozac for "inappropriate elimination" for nearly two years - he told Claudia (the animal communicator) that he didn't like the way it made him feel, and he wanted to make a deal with me - he wouldn't pee on the carpet if I would stop giving him prozac. It worked okay for about four months, and then he just couldn't help himself, I guess. But, when I put him back on it, I gave him a smaller dose, and he seemed to be okay with it.

I was also giving Burble prozac, because he has developed some really unpleasant and aggressive behaviors toward the other cats. It was very successful for a good two or three months, and then, out of the blue, he seemed to realize that it was inside the Pill Pocket, and that was the end of that. He's impossible to pill; if he didn't eat it himself, I couldn't give it to him.

We have Mittens on it. We had him on Amitrip first, but noticed it seemed to caused him pain (it was compounded) and when we tried it in an oral instead of an ear gel it took the hair right of his face where it touched it. So we switched to Prozac. We did notice him sleeping a lot at first on the Prozac, like for more than 8 hours straight without waking up to even pee or eat. After about a month that seemed to get better. We recently increased his dose and I was worried we'd go through the phase again, but I think he is actually a little less sleepy on this higher dose.

I can't say the Prozac is a miracle worker. He still hates/fears his tail. But the episodes are less violent and less frequent. On the Amitrip, he got to fear us too because apparently it burned his ear :(

< your post just reminded me I forgot to go pick up the refill I called in. I should have read the boards earlier today>
