Hi - I have a question about Barbie's readings - First off she is NOT ON INSULIN yet - The vet said on July 19 that she had diabetes but after finding this site & reading various answers people gave me I decided to wait a couple of weeks before I made the decision about whether to put her on insulin or not - I was testing her once a day & everyday her reading were going down - I have now started testing her at 10:30PM before she eats & 2 hours after she eats - I'm using a RElion Confirm meter - Sat. nite - 10:30PM before eating was 95 & 2 hours later is was 120 - Sun. it was 84 before eating & 2 hours later it was 92 - Tonight Mon. It was 63 before eating & 2 hours later it's still 63 - Please is this good or bad - Has she maybe leveled out or is somethingelse going on - She's eating great, playing like she use to, drinking moderate amount of water & nowhere near the amount of urine output it was 2 weeks ago - She was also on the 19th DX with a bad UTI - Thank you in advance for your help - Donnis & Barbie

We consider BG levels 120 or below to be normal. :-D Barbie's looking good. You could try a test 3 hours after eating, but it looks like her pancreas is working fine. Testing two hours after eating could still reflect the food she ate. Speaking of which, what food are you feeding? Low carb wet food is best.

My non diabetic cat once tested over 200 at the vets, then 53 the next day at home. Stress, such as going to the vet, can elevate blood glucose levels, as can infection.

Sounds like you made a good decision to change the diet and wait before starting insulin. It is very possible that she may not need insulin and the UTI could have caused her BG's to spike. Actually any medical condition can do that , needing a dental, illness, etc.

If you are fortunate and don't need to use insulin at all, please continue to feed the low carb diet and test her on occasion, especially if you see any odd behavior, to be sure there isn't an issue. And remember if you do test and get one high reading (above 120) - don't panic. Wait an hour or two and test again and then test again and the next day. It could be the result of anything and may not indicate that she needs insulin.

Wow! Looks like the diet change and the UTI clearing made all the difference in Barbie's BG (blood glucose) readings.

Good job!
