Question about loose stool!

Hi guys,

I am currently helping someone managing her cat's diabetes and everything is going pretty smoothly. The only issue we have is about her cat's poo!

We base our conversations on the following fecal score chart :

Her cat's poo is almost always a score 5.

She also mentioned that sometimes (not all the time) the poo is in some sort of slimy "envelop" (sorry for the disgusting image here, but that's what she tells me).

We tried slippery elm bark and 4 different brands of canned food (completely different content), and nothing seems to change the texture.

Is it ok for a cat to live a life with these score 5 poos, or should she bring the cat to the vet? Oh and by the way, the last blood test came back perfect.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Our Benny was diagnosed just before the New Year, and we immediately switched him to a mostly wet food diet. Once on the wet food diet, his stools became very loose - think very bulky #6. What made it worse was that for the past few weeks prior to his diagnosis, he began pooping on the rugs - apparently his back legs were weak from the diabetes. He's just now resumed using the litter box again, but you can imagine a #6 pile of poo two or three times a day, and on the rug no less - my SpotBot has gotten a real workout!

But anyway, we started mixing psyllium husk powder (i.e., Metamucil) into his food, 1/2 t. twice a day, and we're starting to see an improvement. He's more like a 4 or 5 now.

And yes, we have seen this - when his stools first started to firm up a little.

Thank goodness, he's pooping in the box again - so I don't stress too much if his stools are a little loose, as long as they aren't diarrhetic.
 
Hello,
Molly was diagnosed with diabetes in December. I upped her dose of insulin last night, I noticed this morning her stool was loose. Not bad but why is the reason for that?

I've learned FortiFlora isn't the best probiotic (not enough bacteria or cultures). I was recommended to try Florastor and start with 1/4 to 1/2 of a capsule every meal for 3 days until I see results. I mainly use FortiFlora to entice Ming to eat when he's feeling down.

I might have to try that; my kitty has normal bm that ends in soft and then goes back and has another soft bm soon after. We were on fortiflora for three months and Slippery Elm Bark for five and neither helped at all.
