Question about Lantus and update

I'm using the "pen" plastic vial for lantus. I don't shake it, I roll it. I dropped it yesterday on the floor. It didn't break but I'm sure dropping it shook it. I'm hoping it stays okay to use. Espresso is doing better, lately. He even purred this morning when I pet him (like he used to). :) . I begged the vet to clean cages, scrub floors, or anything I could do to help with Espresso's bills but he wrote back in answer to some questions that I had, that they don't have any need for help at this time :(

There is no need to shake, roll or do anything to the lantus container. In fact, keeping it as still as possible is the best way to handle lantus.

Since you dropped it, please check it to make sure there isn't anything floating in it, or that it's turned opaque or white. These are signs that the lantus went bad.

Are you able to home test as well? What are her Bg's?

Glad that she is doing better and feeling better.

Is Expresso peeing and pooing normal? Cleaning himself? Have some energy? Playing? Also, if you aren't already hometesting, I highly, highly, highly advise doing so: It will give you an idea of Expresso's blood glucose levels, if Expresso is in safe or dangerous numbers, if Expresso is too low to give insulin to and will help us (and most importantly--you) to see trends and how Expresso is reacting to the insulin shots. If you need any help with hometesting, just ask; we are more than happy to help you :-D

Would you be willing to put some info in your signature? It would help us to help you better. See my signature at the end of my post for the type of info that we like to see.

I haven't figured out how to do a signature yet. When I can figure it out I will :) Espresso is going to the bathroom okay, and he actually played with a shoe string a little bit today. He is cleaning himself. I'm trying to get blood from his ear but it just hasn't happened except for one time. Even when I warmed the ear, massaged the ear, squeezed the ear - the meter gives an error code that it's not enough blood if I can get any at all. After trying 8 to 10 times each time, and he's stressed out by then and so am I - Relon meter. That's why I had to leave him at the vet for a day to get tested. He's on 2 units at 8 am and 1 unit at 8pm. (Lantus). Thank You.

Hi ettevyva, welcome! Here's how to edit your signature:

1. Just below the forum banner at the top of the page, you will see the "Board index..." line. Under that is a "User Control Panel" link. Click on it.
2. On the Control Panel page, select the "Profile" tab.
3. On the main profile page, enter your location (city & state) in the Location entry - that's so in case of emergency people will know what timezone you're in and if there are any people of the contact list in your area. Entering other info is totally optional.
4. On left, click on the Edit Signature link. Enter whatever you text you like, but most people follow the format Deb uses (and is in my signature block, as well).

Lantus is given with the same dose twice a day; your vet does not understand this.
You should be giving 1.5 units for each shot.

A few cats do get better results when AM and PM doses are not the same. Yo have to have blood glucose reading to tell if that is right for your cat.

Since their is no spreadsheet setup yet, no data to support a different dose AM and PM, the best thing to do is to keep to the same dose AM and PM. That is what the protocol recommends and what most cats are dosed.

That is so that the insulin depot is maintained at an even level. If you can not shoot on a 12/12 hour schedule, then different doses AM and PM may make sense. I would not suggest you do that different dosing now.

We'd love to get a SS (spreadsheet) set up for you. PM me if you are interested. I've set them up for other people.
