Question about Janet & Binky's canned food list

I understand that I want a wet food that is high protein, moderate fat, and low carbs, but what does that mean? I understand that the higher the protein the better, but what values am I looking for in the fat and carbs?
 
I can answer the carb question if we are talking a diabetic, you want foods that are 10% or less for low carbs. With my diabetics I personally try to stay under 5-7%. Although the protein and fat I don't tend to pay much attention to, since I vary their diet enough I've always figured that kind of balances out, and no one has any health issues other than diabetes.

Sorry to Hijack this post but i also have a (newb) canned food question...

I see that Friskies "Ocean Whitefish and Tuna" is listed on the US canned cat food chart. I'm in Canada and it is not listed on the (Non-US) chart. Can i assume that the values for the food is the same in Canada as the US?

I'm asking becasue currently my newly DX diabetic cat is on Hills Dry MD (13g's of carbs) and I have Friskies Ocean whitefish (@ 6 g's carbs) at home that we were going to get rid of. (thought it was no good for a diabetic)

I would assume that the Ocean Whitefish and Tuna by Friskies would be the same in both the US and Canada, I'm in the US but I feed it to my diabetic, and he is doing great on it (7 months and counting in remission).

Pepper's Mom: Well not just anything, but yes, within reason as long as it is under 10% carbs for a diabetic you should be fairly safe. but you want to try to feed fish no more than once a week, because it is high in heavy metals and phos. so just like with people it isn't a great choice to give to often. Other things to watch is that some, not all cats have allegic reactions to beef or gluten or grain. I have one here that is a little odd fellow who happens to dearly love tuna but is deathly allergic to it. And personally with my diabetic Maxwell I like to keep him between 4-8% carbs. But every cat is different so you might have to experiment a little with different food choices to find what works best for your cat.

I aimed for a balance between protein and fat calories, so went with canned Special Kitty turkey & giblets mixed with 1-2 cans of Fancy Feast turkey & giblets (the latter because Spitzer wasn't eating enough).

I've got a few chubby, senior kitties who do not need a high fat diet!
 
I asked the same question quite a long time ago. I got several responses, but the general range was 40% protein or higher. I went through the food list and highlighted all foods that were 10% or less carbs and 40% or more protein. Then I divided those into fish and all other meat, since I want to keep the fish content low. Now when I go shopping, I can easily find the acceptable foods.

That's what I did Ruth...lol I have picked out 4 canned "other" and 1 fish to feed once a week. I also picked 4 cans for hypo. So I think I'm set on what food to feed now.
