Question about glucose monitoring after dental today

I am wondering if there is anything I need to be aware of in terms of blood glucose monitoring and insulin dose after dental treatment. After Lucy had her dental today where she had two teeth out and her teeth cleaned the dental vet advised to give a lower dose of insulin which I did. She advised this in case Lucy was not eating enough after the dental but thankfully her appetite is good. The vet said go back to our regular dose tonight if Lucy is eating well and is having no issues. Is there anything I need to be aware of in coming days like should I do more frequent blood glucose testing? Thank you.

Anesthesia can lower BG numbers, slow digestion, and increase appetite. If Lucy is getting pain meds, she could be a little loopy or just sleepy. I might get an extra test or two in to make sure there aren't lingering effects of anesthesia. As long as Lucy is acting like herself, I wouldn't worry.

Glad to hear everything went well with the dental :) Did she come home with pain relief and if so what type? I think I recall some people saying their kitties go lower on some types of pain relief, the dental itself may also help her go lower but as far as testing goes let the numbers be your guide, you keep a good eye on her anyway :)

Thank you Sienne and Serryn. We already had temgesic which is buprenorphine from the local vet and the dental vet said that would be fine in case of pain. Lucy also got an injection for pain shortly before we left the hospital and also a nerve block which is standard and one of the sedation drugs also has pain relieving properties. Lucy seems quite good considering she has had a general anesthetic and dental work done. She is still a little drowsy but has a good appetite and is cleaning herself too. I am waiting for her to urinate so I can test her urine for ketones but she is now napping after a snack.

I'm so glad that you have the dental behind you and that all appears well. Years ago Max had a tooth pulled. He ate that night and I wasn't given any pain medication. Poor boy. I didn't know any better to ask but he still acted like nothing had happened.

Thank you so much. I am relieved the dental is done. My Lucy seems well apart from some sedation from the anesthetic and possibly tiredness from the stress of the dental and the long trip to the vet too. It sounds like your Max did well with his dental too.

so glad that is behind you and Lucy now!

The only thing i'd watch for is any sign of infection - pawing at her face where the teeth were pulled or her numbers inexplicably going higher overall. Punkin got infections after having teeth pulled, that's why I'm sensitive about that.

You must be so relieved to have it over and Lucy doing ok!

Yeah for the dental being done. I know you must be feeling so relieved now!

Neko got an antibiotic (clindamycin) for a week after her extraction. My other kitty didn't after his extraction. Might depend on whether the vet though there was inflammation that needed to be treated.

Hi Wendy. Thank you and I am feeling very relieved now. I asked the vet whether she would give Lucy antibiotics and she said she would give an antibiotic injection as Lucy's mouth might be sore the first few days after the dental and she may not tolerate antibiotics orally so I requested no convenia injection as I was anxious about it given that it has such a long lasting effect and so she gave an injection of a penicillin type antibiotic which lasts a couple of days she said. She also decided to get a sterile urine sample while Lucy was sedated so as to rule out a urinary tract infection which might also be contributing to high glucose levels as she said urinary tract infections were common in cats with diabetes. We are waiting on the results of those tests and if bacteria is found we will continue with oral antibiotics. She said there were some white cells found in the urine and a trace of blood but the blood might be from doing the test where the needle enters the bladder so not to worry too much about that at the moment. Lucy is recovering very well and I am so relieved she did so well with the dental and the anesthetic too. I had been worrying that the anesthetic might affect her vertigo issues but it didn't.

Voula, if you said already I may have missed it, but are you giving her the bupe? She will be sore especially after extractions, and you want to stay in front of the pain to keep them more comfortable. I was instructed to give every 12 hours, but that first evening regretted waiting too long to dose him as he was restless, spacy, and likely hurting. He calmed down a bit after he got it. It's ok to dose every 8 hours if needed, which I did for a day before going back to every 12 hours the next day. It took several days for him to start bouncing back and seem himself, eat normally, etc....longer than expected. We were on terrible ABs that upset his tummy which didn't help. The bupe is very easy to give since you just squirt it into their cheek pouch and I think really helps get them over the hump. And if they are on AB's, it's good to give a probiotic which I think was already mentioned. DO you have fortiflora? Most kitties love the taste so it also helps them to want to eat.

Thank you so much. I haven't given Lucy any buprenorphine yet as the vet gave her a pain relief medication by injection just before we came home from the hospital and I don't know how long that lasts so I am waiting for the vet to call and I will ask her about further pain medication. Lucy seems fine and is eating normally and purring and I am able to pat her around her mouth and she doesn't react as if she has pain but of course I don't know. In fact I had to limit her food a bit last night as she wanted more and I was afraid she might vomit because she had an anesthetic. This morning Lucy wanted a second breakfast and then had a little snack too. I don't have any fortiflora but I can look at getting some probiotics if the vet prescribes any further antibiotics in addition to the antibiotic injection which lasts a few days and is a penicillin type antibiotic. I asked for no convenia as I was anxious about it and also no metacam as I was anxious about it too.

Sounds like she is doing great Voula..and probably very happy to have her bad toofies out. You know her best so if you want to wait and see on the bupe and/or get feedback from your vet, then am sure that is fine. You have some on hand if needed. Hank was on it for several days but his was a big procedure with multiple extractions. I know you must be so relieved to have this out of the way, hoping she rewards you with great numbers and many kitty kisses.

Thank you Julie. I will watch for any sign of infection with the symptoms you mentioned. I am really relieved that the dental is done and that Lucy is doing so well after it.
