Question About Dry Food

As recommended on another thread, I'm going to try switching my cat to a dry food other than the one recommended by our vet (Purina MD). I know that wet food is best, but that's not an option right now.

The "Dry Food List" recommends Wellness Core, but when I looked it up on Petsmart, there were several varieties of "Core." Does anyone know if the different flavors have different amounts of carbs? Thanks!

I have the same question about Nature's Variety Instinct. . . there seem to be a lot of options.

I believe it is the gold bag and doesn't specify a particular protein source.

You might check food lists at Binky's Page or Cat Info for more details.

Young Again 0 carb is another brand that may work; I believe it is by Internet sale only.
 
I think you do NOT want the "Indoor" formula. I can't remember everything, but I remember that "indoor" had more carbs than the others.
 
I've been to Bink's page. The page provides carb amounts for "Wellness Core." There are at least 4 varieties of Wellness dry food classified as "Core." I am asking if anyone knows which variety is referenced on Bink's list, or if they're all OK.
 
I don't know which Wellness Core ones are supposed to be 11% carbs but the one I picked was the grain free Turkey, Turkey Meal and Duck. But...both my cats hated it so I brought it back and picked up the Nature's Variety Chicken Meal dry food which someone posted on another thread was 5.2% carbs. And both of my cats LOVE it. They can't get enough of it. The poster specifically linked that kind with the 5.2% so I don't know about the other kinds. I actually posted this same question about Nature's Variety last week and I never got an answer about it so maybe you will have more luck ;-)


I read somewhere that a lot of cats just don't like Wellness Core but I am sure some do.
 
I'm still checking for you, but the one person I know who used it when she was transitioning her cats told me there was only one available so it was the only one she used: the Wellness Core Grain-Free Original Formula, but now it might be all of them...or even none of them any more.

If I absolutely had to feed my cats dry food, it would be the Young Again Zero carb because of stories like this.

Not sure if anyone has shared wit you Dr. Lisa's Transitioning Dry Food Addicts page, so if you haven't seen it, it should help.

My cat mostly refuses to eat (low carb) wet food also. Through a recommendation on this board, I found a dry food product with zero carbs. It's called Young Again and it has been a godsend. I know a lot of people here frown on ANY kind of dry... but Mac's BG has been dropping steadily on the YA so for us it has been a great option.

I found this today in another post. REALLY glad I didn't give Milo the CORE turkey and duck. Thought it was 11% and that was too high. Now I know it is almost 22%. Geez.

Indoor Core
Carbohydrates 27.4%

Core Turkey & Duck:
Carbohydrates 21.8%

Sorry, I shared that because I meant that it should help you with the dry food options since she mentions the lower carb, dry varieties that are acceptable, not that you might need help in switching. ;-) Can't you read my mind? :lol:
 
I just ordered that Young Again Zero carbs dry food last week and it came yesterday. Free shipping too. I know this food is expensive, but my cat, Jibber is too heavy, and I mainly wanted it for him and for my cancer survivor, Woodee, who also has Interstitial Cystitis and should not be on dry at all, but a little of this might help his hunger for dry.

They really loved it when I opened it up yesterday. The pellets are nice and small and different sizes, and not real hard.

If you can afford one bag to try, it would be worth it. After the discount, it cost $ 44.10. For 8 pounds.

I also just got my Young Again food in the mail. Of course they don't seem to like it as much as the sample :/

Milo has only had Young Again today and his BG is 151. Has anyone experienced higher BG's on Young Again? I wonder if they would take it back still. I haven't seen a number that high in 2 months. Of course I wish he would eat his Fancy Feast but his pancreatitis is pretty bad lately. I really wish Evo was back on the shelves. Anyone seen it? It has a bit higher carbs than Nature's Variety but his BG is lowest on Evo. I was really hoping the Young Again would work out :cry:
 
That isn't a horrible number.

Many things may elevate glucose levels. Check for dental inflammation, urinary tract infection, and upper respiratory symptoms as these are common instigators.

For example:
- New food may generate excessive eating behavior, increasing the calories consumed, and thus increasing the glucose level.
- Infection may increase the glucose level.
- Steroid medications may increase the glucose level.

The glucose level is multifactorial - activity levels, different foods, different times, different absorption rates, different hormone production (not just insulin), may impact on glucose levels.
 
The young again website states they will take the food back for full refund (minus shipping, and you have to cover shipping to return it) for up to 60 days. I copied this from the 'health benefits' tab on the cat food pages :

Hello, I put both of my cats (diabetic and non diabetic) on the 'zero carb' Young Again Pet Food to supplement my kitties Wellness Wet Food meals. They are doing great on it! It did take a minute for them to get used to it...also, they don't eat anywhere near as much of it because it is a better quality food. That 8 pound bag lasts forever! They are both much more playful and their 'poop' is much more moist. It used to be very dehydrated and the diabetic used to be constipated. The Zero Carb has made her more 'regular'. Don't forget to mix a new food with an old food at first. :-D
