When drawing insulin from a vial or pen, I read that one should not push anything back, not insulin or air.
I realized I have been doing this to the small amount I have in a vial that the vet gave me to see me through til my Solostar pen came in the mail.
Can this harm the insulin?

With a vial, you should inject air to help pressurize it and make it easier to pull the insulin out. If you want to pull 2 units of insulin, you should first inject 2U of air.

The pens are already pressurized, so you don't need to insert air.

Putting air into the vial is OK....but once the insulin is in the syringe, you don't want to push that insulin back into the vial …..inside the syringe there's a little bit of lubricant to make the plunger move smoother. Once there's insulin in the syringe, it can "mix" with that tiny bit of lubricant and after enough times, could contaminate the vial.
