Question about diet controlled diabetes

Hello all!

It’s been a long time since I’ve posted (and I know, I don’t have a spreadsheet, really sorry about that!) and that is because Bluu managed to regulate enough to be diet controlled! He’s definitely not in remission because my goodness if he manages to get into the other cat’s crunchies his blood sugar takes a wallop!

I did have one question that I’ve been struggling to find an answer to. He’s on a strictly fancy feast pate diet (has been since about March or so) and his blood sugar usually hangs out around the 84.6-102.6 mark (hope I’m doing that math right, just x18 on his numbers). I test him around once a week just to make sure it’s consistent.

However, as the weather is getting cooler he has had occasions, twice so far, where his blood sugar drops to around 59.4-68.4. First time I noticed it his head was shaking a little? Just gave him some of the other cat’s crunchies and he was fine.

But I was wondering if this is just a thing that happens sometimes? I’ve tested him on other days around his lunch time meals (which is when this happened both times) and his blood sugar has been fine!

Is it possible it’s because the fish fancy feast pate is lower in calories? He usually gets the chicken or beef, but sometimes fish is all they have at the store.

Appreciate any insight!

There are small variations in calories per flavor, I don't think they're more than 10 cal/can, but that might be enough to make a difference for him? Maybe it's the difference in fat content, or something like that?
The easiest way to get the data for different flavors and foods, is to go to the Chewy.com site and look up the food. Below the photo of the can, under About This Item, click on Nutritional Info. It gives ingredients, calorie %ages, calorie content. They do keep their listings up to date with manufacturer's info.
Also, since you are comparing just FF pate's, up next to the picture of the can, you can select each flavor, click it, and the nutritional info changes to the specifics for that flavor.
Chewy is the best place for comparing ingredients and nutritional info. so much easier than searching the web or manufacturer's listings, especially since they have so many different foods available to look at. (And, they are the greatest for ordering food as well. We have used them for years. We just always order a couple cases at a time to get the free shipping. And if there is ever a problem, they have the world's best customer service, I am not kidding.)

I really, really do not mean to put down the Food Chart in any way, as it is an amazing piece of work, but it was made in 2017.
The data on Chewy is updated as soon as they receive changes from the manufacturers; I know this from having discussions with them when FF was changing recipes and we were desperately ordering massive amounts of food to get the flavor we needed before they got the new stock. (Two of our five have chicken allergies, another one is sensitive to fish, and one is diet-controlled diabetic. Ingredient changes are a major crisis here.)

Hi Gracie yes I use the Chewy site also :cat:

Note, Chewy is a US site, caregiver is in Canada. They do ship to Canada now, but I don't know what the prices are like. Plus they don't list all the diabetes friendly food available in Canada.
