Hardey's big day is tomorrow. With all my nerves, I can't remember if the vet said to with-hold food only or food/water after midnight. Anyone know for sure? He hasn't eaten much today. I've been trying to force feed him as much as possible since I know it'll be awhile until he eats again. I don't know how long after the dental before he feels like eating. Should I take in some wet food with me to the vet to feed him after he wakes up?

It's been so long since one of my cats had a dental, that I don't remember.

At least this will bump you up for eyes.

Pick up food yes; I think some water is ok.

The anesthesia may cause nausea and eating too soon may result in vomiting. It may impede coordination enough that gagging could happen.

If it'll be several hours before you can pick him up, take a couple teaspoons of food for him and they'll feed him when he's alert enough. Otherwise, start with 1-2 teaspoons and try feeding at 30 minute intervals to ease the food in and be able to stop if he shows any signs of nausea or vomits.

Thanks guys. I'm so nervous... Being older, overweight, diabetic, and liver issues means he's not the best candidate for this. I just don't see any other way for him to want to eat and not feel pain. Fingers crossed all goes well tomorrow.

I do have to leave him all day (should be able to pick him up after work about 4:00 hopefully). I packed a can of FF, so if he needs to eat, he can (although he usually is so upset about being at the vet, I doubt he will). :( I'm taking Friday off from work so I can be with him and watch for any problems. The way my luck seems to go, if I didn't take off, I would come home after work on Friday and find him having trouble and my vet would be closed for the weekend. Better to take the day off and if necessary take him in before they close on Friday, right?

I'll take the water up tonight and put it down in the morning so he can have a sip.

I'll put an update on tomorrow after we get home.

I just did a dental a few months ago.
It was no food 12 hours before surgery , and no water ( for FD) .
They don't want anything coming back up that could choke them while under anesthesia.

I would take a food he likes best otherwise they'll very likely give him some high carb dry.....

Paws crossed for a successful dental and that he'll feel so much better afterwards.

Kate just had a dental in July. No food or water after midnight.
I was a nervous wreck too about it, worrying so much. She did fine. Fingers crossed and good thoughts for your guy too.

Chicken Little just had a dental in May. No food or water after midnight.
I was a nervous wreck too about it, worrying so much. She did fine.
Sending purrs and prayers your way!!

Thanks Dyana. I've got him all packed and ready to go, can of food, and lots of notes telling them what to do and how to call me. Thanks for the support.

Please give us an update after Hardey's dental is done today and you get to bring your guy back home.
